Any one had there head re-built on there fj80 ? If so how much $ who ?, what mileage ? suggestions ? Getting ready for my super charger !

I assume that you are refering to the vehicle in your sig line. In that event you do not have an FJ80, you have an FZJ80. That is a significant difference.
Expect to pay a competent machine shop around 400 bucks to surface, grind the valves and adjust the valve clearances for you.
DO NOT trust it to a shop that has not worked on that type of head, you do not want to be their test case.

Thanks Dan Sorry about any confuision on the "fj80" and my having a FZJ80, just my lazy AS* I think I might have to find some one out of state for the rebuild,anyone have some one they have used for this ?

I am going to send my head to Clearwater Cylinder Head in Clearwater Florida. I spoke with John over the phone and he sounded familiar with these heads. He quoted me a price of $350 - $400 depending on what parts are needed and this includes setting the valve clearances.

What is the story on surfacing the cylinder head? I know not to do it unless it is needed. I am concerned about the cam timing.

According to the factory the head is not to be surfaced, period. If it fails the straight-edge test, Mr T. says it must be replaced. It seems however that a minor ammount can be removed without ill effect. I would suggest the smallest ammount possible. Robbie can chime in with his experience relating to surfacing the 1FZ head.

I just got word today from Clearwater Cylinder head that they took off .005 from the surface of my head. Is this OK? Will the factory hydraulic cam chain tensioner take up this minute difference? I also had two bad exhaust valves replaced and the rest of the head rebuilt for $350.00.
Thanks. I'm used to my past FJ40's, 60's and 62's designs. This new double overhead cam business looks nice but it is uncharted waters for me. I didn't think that much would effect things all that much. I should be able to adjust the timing to compensate at the distrubutor I assume?
havent done much internal engine work, do they grind/surface the head while engine is intact. A co-worker had a Camery done by a surface machine that retrofitted to the motor while in the chassis. Am I correct on how they do this, for $400-500 it seems like this is the way its done??

You only want to grind a head if it is warped beyond what is allowed. You would only check for warped head after a head gasket failure. The surface in question is the bottom of the haed where it mates with the engine block. Between the two is the head gasket,
To work on the head or the head gasket the head has to be removed from the block, the block can remain in the truck. To get the head out requires removal of most of the upper accessories of the engine, the throttle body, distributor, valve cover, cam's, intake and exhaust manifolds etc

I use Dover Cylinder head (www.doverusa.com) Clearwater and Dover are the two best head rebuilding shops on the East coast in my opinion. I've used both for Mitsubishi V6 cylinder heads and they do great work. I live 15 minutes from Dover and asked them about the FZJ80 head and they were familiar with it.
I have a spare FZJ80 head in the basement that I was going to take in there to get redone and then just swap in the new head w/o leaving the cylinders exposed for days while the head is rebuilt. I don't want to keep it in the basement anymore so I'm putting it up on eBay this weekend to clear it out!
I don't think you'll go wrong with either Clearwater or Dover. Just make sure you ask them to heat straighten the heads before measuring. I know for a fact that Dover does this but it is always better to ask for what you want.
