Well I have been working on this project every day this week, after letting the frame sit around since I first finished it last fall.

I started out by taking the frame drawings from the FSM, and printing them to scale. Then I cut down a length of half inch square tubing for the frame rails, and tach welded it back together every few inches. With the frame drawing, I heated up the tubing and made the first bend, then followed along until the tubing lined up with the print. The first attempt was perfect, ground the welds off and I had my rails.

With the frame rails complete, I then measured and cut the front and rear cross members. Made the bends in the middle of the rails, and welded in the cross members.

For those of you familiar with the Tamiya TLT axles, they are the same front and rear. So the rear axle has the full knuckle assembly, not very scale for a rear axle. So I welded up a piece that replaced the entire knuckle assembly, then had a company machine them from aluminum. I got a few free sets out of the deal, and do not have to deal with customer support :bounce:

Now we fast forward to this week, several months later..... Monday night I cut out and bent up all 4 spring hangers.

Tuesday night I cut out 8 shackle sides, a little on the long side. I might make them a little shorter, but I will try them as they are first.

And tonight was a good night, the axles were mounted to the leaf springs. I also mounted the tranny, steering servo, and the back of the body.

I still need to modify some larger tires to fit the rims, the final tires will be taller. Some parts of the frame need to be boxed, such as around the front shackles and the tranny. Also need to fab a trac bar for the rear axle. And a list of other little things I still have to do.

Still deciding on the color.... Might just go with john deer green.

Great work! Keep us posted on this project, its going to look sweet.

that is sick......

Holy Crap you are off your rocker!

TOYOFAST here and mostly on Pirate has a website (i have no idea the name, PM him) devoted to RC and he goes to MOAB each year for some crazy nationals of some sort. He is also my parts counter person at my Toyota store. He will have a massive amount of info if you should need it.

Also I would like to know the scale as I might just make some mini decals if you wish or if I can do them.

Best,

Shane

very very cool..........love the mini axle stands

great job!

Thanks, I will post any updates as I go along with this one :)

Thank you, Toyofast posts on one of the RC boards I visit, he has some good ideas too. But I have had one of his old trucks I got in a trade, the work wasn't the best, he rushed it and took short cuts. And that Moab nationals event has only been held once so far, and this year it sounds like it will take place some where else.

the scale is 1:8.42 I came up this this scale when I decided to use the touring car rims. Of course I messed up and measured the wrong area of the rim. So I think they ended up being closer to 16 inch rims rather then 17 inch rims.... The original idea was to fabricate the entire body as well, but then I got stuck on how to make the spring hangers.

So months later and this new body was released, I had to pick one up. I was going to make another truck for the body, but I had to set it on top of my frame. And by pure dumb luck, the body was a perfect fit in every way possible. The wheel arcs in the frame lined up with the wheel wells in the body. The front bib dropped perfectly on the front cross member, and the back of the body lined up just right with the rear of the frame. This entire frame was scaled to match the rims, with no plans for a lexan body

So I decided to use the lexan body, and tone down the amount of detail that would go into this build. Though the detail is still pretty impressive so far :D

great job!

Again thank you, I picked up the jack stands at harbor freight ;)

I haven't seen that one yet, though I do see quite a few impressive builds. Looks like his is really top heavy

Well I worked on the new tires, still need to finish them though. And those are not the rims I will be using, they were the only ones I had though.

Painted the body today, painting it on the outside for this project. If I can not cut up the front bezel and paint it to look right, I will be making my own out of plastic and gluing it in place. Painting the body on the outside will make blending it much easier in the end.

I am going to let the paint dry a full 24 hours before I paint the top white, along with the bezel. I think I will stop at Target today and pick up some mesh paper holder or trash can to use for the expanded metal behind the bezel.

Ohh and I need to move the rear axle back a little bit... Its close to where it needs to be.

Sweet but you might consider a cut and turn on those axles - the ujoint angles look a bit severe. I also dig the jackstands, too cool.

Thanks, and that little one is pretty cool too.

Can't really do a cut and turn with these axles... But I do need to make some shims for the front axle, might shim the rear axle as well. Maybe I will work on those tonight.

Painted the bezel, cutout the center, and added headlight buckets. Still need to add the bulbs and wire them up. I also moved the rear axle back.

Couple more pictures, painted the top and hooked up the headlights. Also glued in some mesh behind the bezel.

WOW I'm...

WOW. Just too damn sick for words. Scale jackstands... how damn cool is that?

I am also curious aas too the cost.....I know I can't afford it but man

I wonder how hard it would be to design a fj60 body and frame? That would be awesome

lunyou

You going to make a custom front bumper??

lunyou

EDIT: could you take a close up on the end of the frame? Thanks
