Something is rattling while in drive, but goes away when shift to N or P. Sounds similar to exhaust shields, very tinny. Also, doesn't seem to rattle when completely warm.

Kind of tough to climb under there while in D and haven't enlisted anyone I trust enough to keep their foot on the brake while I climb under there (not sure about using the wife, she just upped my life insurance )

Any ideas?

I had a rattle that would be present when in drive at low RPMs (like mainly sitting at a traffic light). Turned out the plastic engine cover was vibrating and knocking against a bracket on the driver's side. Totally sounded like a heat shield type rattle. Just had to loosen up the cover fasteners and reposition the cover slightly so that the contact was gone.

check the shield on the y pipe coming across the center of the truck. That was the culprit of my rattle, that little bastard.

I have a rock that is lodged in there and rattles all the time. It is embarrassing lol, people look at you with shock that such a nice truck is making such a sound. I cant get the rock out (no clue on how it got in there) because all the bolts have seized and rusted. But no shield rattle. I an thinking about just breaking them off and them clamping them with some hose clamps. Anything to get that rock out of there.

I have the mystery rattle too, but pretty much at any speed or idle. So I got underneath and tried to isolate heat shields and listen carefully for the source. It is inside the muffler! There must be baffles in there that have given up. Nothing outside is loose or rattling either hot or cold. So I turned the truck off and shook the muffler, only to hear the rattle again.

I hate to spend the cash to replace a muffler (probably big bucks), especially since it has lasted almost 10 years and 130,000 miles, but the rattle is embarassing.

Sounds like we ( as in we, I mean the spousal unit) has the same rattle as described here. I will check the cover, y-pipe and shields in the morning. Ours goes away once warm but dropping the kids off, idle-stop, idle-stop, etc - she said it sound slike it is falling apart.....not good. Must get this solved quickly....

Good places to start, thanks guys.

Climbed under with a friend on the brake pedal, and as far as I can tell it's something rattling around the muffler. When I put my foot on the muffler (it was very hot), the rattle goes away. Maybe the muffler strap, or God forbid something in the muffler itself.

Last time I had a small rock stuck in a difficult spot and rattling, I was able to get a pair of multigrips onto the rock and crush it, then blow out the smaller pieces. Saved all the effort of disassembling stuff. You may be able to do the same.

Well I was wrong - I stopped by my local muffler shop yesterday and asked about the rattling muffler, expecting to receive a quote for new parts. Instead the mechanic said he found some loose bracket on the rear of the muffler that was doing no good (except rattling), so he removed it free of charge. No more noise! He also said the muffler was in good shape, 10 years and 130,000 miles later.

I just pulled a rock out of my cat shield with some pliers today, MUCH better, but still a rattle. I'm going to get some more clamps today.

I forgot the size of the cat shield, do you by chance now the diameter?

^ I tried clamps too (forget the size but they were about the largest they sell) but often the noise was coming from something inside the shields. I ended up replacing the shields however I discovered the biggest culprit was rust e-brake components - they were rattling like hell.

there really isn't any rust in GA, but I have a few patches from going up north from parking on the ocean for a few weeks. I'll check the e-brake brakets/cables.

Thanks
