Rattle when in D, but not in N or P?

So if it is the foam padding what material would be best to replace it with? Does it make sense that it would be the engine cover and only do it for about 10 seconds? It only makes the sound in the morning after about 10 minutes of driving but it is loud enough for people in cars around me to hear it. There must me a moving part below the cover hitting it. The best way I can describe the sound is that it sounds like putting your fingers into a slow moving fan.

I think I've figured out that my rattle is the electric fan in front of the radiator. I haven't messed with it to know for sure, but I knocked it the other day and it sounded like it was a similar noise.

edit:

I think this is the part, #4

what you're describing might actually be a fan hitting a shroud somewhere. Like was suggested, have someone else put the car in D and see if you can trace the noise.

My rattle is a droning rattle that only occurs when the AC condenser turns on.

I've been meaning to PM you. My deep bass is back, I installed the DT cat-back and it immediately came back

Hi everyone. This is my first day on the forum and have already gotten some really good information. This thread seems to address an issue that I have with my 2000 LC but would like to get an opinion on where to start (I’m a little mechanically challenged). In the morning, after about 10 minutes of driving when stopped at a red light in D, my LC makes a very loud rattling noise for about 10 seconds. The colder, the louder & longer it lasts but usually not more than 10 seconds. It will only make the sound if the weather is below 50. I tried to replicate the sound in the garage but either it was too warm or it didn’t make the sound because I didn’t have it in D. Based on this thread it sounds like either the heat shield around the cat or the plastic engine cover (or engine dust cover)? can someone advise where I should start and if possible upload a picture of the plastic engine cover? Trying to save a trip to the dealer. thanks

Money says it's this. I had the exact same symptoms. Get a 10 mm socket, pull off the cover, and enjoy the silence.

Thanks everyone for responding. I'll start with the engine cover since that seems to be the easiest.

I had a VERY similar problem after replacing my starter. same temps and everything. The engine cover was the culprit. Sometimes, not always, it is that simple (and cheap)

So I get home tonight and push around the engine cover and it defintely sounds like that is where the noise is coming from. I can't replicate it because as I indicated before it only happens on cold days, 10 minutes after I start driving and stopped at a right light in D. The good news is that I have 7 months before I will hear the sound again (live in Dallas) but I would sure like to know what causes the cover to vibrate like that and only for 10 seconds. I took the cover off and the two foam pads underneath look in really good shape so something underneath must be shaking when the engine warms up (also seems to happen more when i have the cabin heat all the way to high but fan not on). I know the easiest thing to do is take off the cover but its bugging me that I don't know exactly what is going on. Any further insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

It drove me crazy as it started to do it on cold days right after the starter was replaced in January but then we had a warm spell.

Stopped doing it.

The weather then returned to norm Jan temps and it started it again shortly into my drive. My foam pads are toast but placing two fender washer sized rubber washers on each screw/bolt point helped immensely. I also would like to know why this rattle or vibration occurs but since so many folks on MUD had been thru the same thing, my OCD has decided to live with it.

thanks, i'll give the fender washer a shot. Did you consider adding new foam pads underneath?

I have but haven't had time or motivation to source a suitable replacement.

I ended up using two rubber washers per mount. The two thickness being apprx 1/4". Found at Lowe's in the auto drawer in the specialty fastener bin. Ace has them two in case either are in your area.
