Rattle when in D, but not in N or P?

ya the ebrake components in the rear squeak like crazy when going over the littlest bumps.

IIRC, I used 5-6" hose clamps for the cat heat shields and they've held up through a rough season of snow and salt here in chi-city.

^ update on my rattle... it was the same as Eds' above - just a muffler bracket. Damn thing twas driving me crazy!

BUMP!

I, too, have this rattle that seems to be getting louder by day. So, is it just a bracket that you unbolt? Grind off? I'll have to look at it tonight after work.

I think he torched miine off. You know how muffler shops work - no bolts, all welds.

Had this same issue happen with the hundy. Couldn't find out what it was. Finally had the wife sit in it and it turned out to be the engine dust cover. Messed with it for a little bit and then ended up just taking it off. I already feel the extra hp at the wheels because of the weight difference.......

Ive got something similar but the temperature seems to have a lot to do witht how loud it rattles. If its cold out its reall loud to about 2k rpm then goes away completely. Once the engine is warm or if its warm ooutside the rattle is a lot quieter and stops about 1600 rpm.

Its been driving me crazy thought it was inside the dash and was going to try to tear that off and look around...

EDIT: just read the faq on the cat heat shield rattle, went out and checked mine out and its not that, its on there tight and in good shape. Dont want to hijack a thread but mine sounds like its coming up from the dash.

Also hit hi on the ahc and got out to watch it work, that was pretty cool to see from the outside.

No im going to do that right now 240am or not, will post back. Ih8rattle

EDIT: The engine cover's bolts were all tight as i imagine they should be. Ill just take it to the dealer, let them diag, then ask yall how to fix :p

On the other hand I hate to give up but not sure i know enough about this to figure it out

I had the same rattle. I had my wife put it in drive and power brake it. She was scared she was going to run over me but I found that stupid rattle and it would have been worth getting ran over for. I had already put like 3 clamps on each cat thinking it was that.

On the back of the resonator there is a little bracket that was hitting against the resonator. It was more noticeable when cold but it would also rattle when taking off from a stop. I just bent it out of the way. I noticed my resonator was shot while I was under there. It's coming apart at the seams because of rust and has a nice solid exhaust leak. Toyota wants $380 for a new resonator but I can get an aftermarket for $75. Is there any downfall to just getting an aftermarket resonator for $75?

BTW- Let me know, I can take a picture of the bracket I bent out of the way if you want.

The bolts can be completely tight and the cover still vibrate and cause a noise. That is because there is foam underneath the cover that deteriorates over time, and the plastic deforms slightly over time as well.

Have someone sit in the driver seat and put the truck in D with the brakes on, rev the engine a bit for you, etc while you watch under the hood at the cover.

The cover may not be the source of your noise, but what you are describing certainly sounds like the cover could be the cause.

This is what I noticed on my dust cover, when I took it off. There is a foam piece on the driver side that was half-way worn off. Thought about trying to replace it, but why waste the time and effort. Just take the cover off, it does nothing to help/hinder the engine, my .02.

Thanks for the tip. How will it sound? I don't want to make it much louder. Any performance gains?

Seat-o-pants meter says no performance gains. It does sound better on a cold start, I have only heard it once when someone drove away down the street and it sounds like it has a V8. For some reason, almost everyone thinks I have aftermarket exhaust. I have the loudest, deeper sounding 100 I have ever heard with stock exhaust. I will post I short clip of what mine sounds like going up a steep hill at half throttle when I get back to my computer.

Please post a pic, new to this stuff and am not sure what it looks like also where under the car? Im determined to start doing this by myself and lessen trips to mechanic.

2000, that sounds bad-A, like an actual V8. I think i have a trip to the muffler shop in my future. Did you replace it with a straight tube welded in?

I think I have the same rattle coming from the bottom enegine cover. It all started after I changed the timing belt and all stuff associated, at which time i removed the lower sheild and put back on.

sound only comes up when vehicle isnt fully warm at a stop light in Drive. my solution thus far has been to put the truck in Neutral at the light as to save face from having a raggedy sounding truck. once he snow melts, i'm gonna take the lower cover off and see if it goes away.

This is the back of my muffler. It's under the PS rear. See the little bracket flange about a quarter inch from the rusty muffler?
I think it's supposed to have a bolt or screw going into it. It apparently fell out or rusted out and seperated from the muffler. I just bent the flange away from the muffler a bit. It was really close and tapping against the muffler making a horrilbe sound. I'm pretty sure this is your problem if it's not the cats or the heat shield. Mine would rattle when in drive or rattle after a cold start for about 20 seconds. It would also rattle pulling away from a stop for the first 10 seconds. Glad it's gone. Now I need just need to get a new cat back exhaust.

Hi everyone. This is my first day on the forum and have already gotten some really good information. This thread seems to address an issue that I have with my 2000 LC but would like to get an opinion on where to start (I’m a little mechanically challenged). In the morning, after about 10 minutes of driving when stopped at a red light in D, my LC makes a very loud rattling noise for about 10 seconds. The colder, the louder & longer it lasts but usually not more than 10 seconds. It will only make the sound if the weather is below 50. I tried to replicate the sound in the garage but either it was too warm or it didn’t make the sound because I didn’t have it in D. Based on this thread it sounds like either the heat shield around the cat or the plastic engine cover (or engine dust cover)? can someone advise where I should start and if possible upload a picture of the plastic engine cover? Trying to save a trip to the dealer. thanks

Jimmy,

I would have someone put it Drive and make it rattle. Open the hood and push on the engine cover in different spots. I test drove a 100 a few weeks ago and the engine cover rattled so bad I though it was going to explode. It was on a cold start.

I'll try that tonight when I get home but my fear is that the car is already warm (and the weather is getting warmer here in Dallas) that it won't make the noise. Really dumb question but what exactly is the 'engine cover'? Thanks
