Hey all,

I've had this annoying rattle for a while now, and I just can't seem to find the cause. I'm trying to post videos of the noise, so we'all see how that goes. I only seem to hear the rattle when in drive. Revving in neutral or park does nothing. That being said, I put it up on a lift and put the car in drive, but could not replicate the noise at all. It also seems to happen around 1500-1900 RPM regardless of gear. Very rarely I'll hear it faintly while at a stop light. It's most noticeable for about 30 minutes after starting and eventually subdues to almost nonexistent. I've removed heat shields, banged on my exhaust all over with a rubber hammer, secured it with wire where a hangar was broken, used hose clamps to tighten down a heat shield that was bent near the transfer case, and changed diff and transfer case oil. Not even the slightest change. The only slight lead I have is one I hear a bit of a rattle from the muffler when I hit the exhaust exiting the back of it (bit not when hitting the muffler itself). Any outside the box suggestions on how to diagnose or fix would be much appreciated.

SNIP I've removed heat shields, banged on my exhaust all over with a rubber hammer, secured it with wire where a hangar was broken...SNIP

With the exhaust hangers, often all you'll need is the small rubber cushion that rots and falls off. Best value in Land Cruiser exhaust parts hands down, as they're like a couple of bucks apiece.

It may help with the rattle, because they tend to dampen vibration better than a wired-up hanger would. Does sound like a heat shield rattle, though.

Check your heat shields on your exhaust pipes and the one around the cat-converter. I had a similar rattle and it was the heat shields around the exhaust pipes just before the cat-converter. I put some regular hose clamps around them to keep it tight and has been fine since.

Yup, heat shield. Once I clamped mine down, I installed sliders and now the cat heat shield rattles against the sliders. Never ending rattles. :flipoff2:

You could always cut off the shield...
