I have found bit and pieces all over the place regarding this, but I have a few questions.

My truck...
1994 Landcruiser 155k
No ABS (love it)
Rear drum brakes
No VC

From everything I have read, this is considered a rare model.

This is a 1FZ80 as opposed to an FJ80 correct?

Solid rear axle or floating?

Is this as susceptible to HG problems or does it not matter?

Do I need to do the PHH fix?

So onto my main question...what makes this so rare? Just the fact that not many were made or the fact that this is a desirable setup?

Thanks so much. I love driving her and she has been a pleasure so far with PM and all the mods that need to be done.

Take care.

Rare how? It doesn't sound all to rare. The 155k miles sounds nice, but isn't unheard of for a 20yr old 80. The head gasket and PHH can always be an issue on these engines but a lot can depend on how they have been maintained.

Who or why was it determined to be "rare"? Craigslist adds dont count lol
Id call that a transitional model, some may not be so nice :D
Only rare 94 I would say is the blue marlin.

I guess you mean because it has a 1FZ but drums and no abs ?
Not that rare. 93 and 94s began using the 1fz but the no ABS, semi float axle, and no airbags carried through on some units up to 95. So i think that's what your seeing. Not so much rare or desireable but an odd/different setup from factory during the switchover phase.

Your model is still referenced as a FZJ80 due to the 1fzfe motor
Axle is solid.... and floating :D Drum brakes means c clip semi float rear axle
The head gasket can be an issue on this motor but don't let all the hype scare you. It's a great motor, monitor the cooling system and don't overheat her and she'll treat you well. You do have a PHH on that motor and its worth taking a look at. Replacing it sucks but so much better with mud at your side in the driveway than in a gas station parking lot 2 hrs from home. Cheap insurance.

Yeah I wasn't thinking it was rare in the sense that people would be beating down my door trying to buy it from me. Transitional makes much more sense to me and I don't see many with the same setup.

Yeah I monitor the heat on it and ride it hard and treat it like a baby. Gotta make the best of it.

It's unlocked, nobody will be beating down your door. Rest assured.

Yeah I am ok with that. I get stopped all the time because there aren't many up in my area. I shopped around for over a year and saw some locked ones within a reasonable drive, but it was more important to me to find one in good condition, all service records, limited rust, with a few problems I knew I could fix in order to get my price down to $2,750.

All things considered and just driving through a foot of snow on some trails on my way home from work, I am pretty pleased.

Thanks for the clarification on some of the specifics of my rig.

My '94, bought new in August, 1994 with a July, 1994 build date has ABS and disc brakes front/rear, no airbags (they came along in '95). I guess the only thing 'rare' might be the drum brakes, but that'd be about it.

Head gasket, good advice already stated and plenty if info on the board about them. That being said, mine went at 205K.

PHH - 20 year old rubber. You make the call, but IMHO it's worth the preventative maintenance to replace it along with most of the rest of the rubber in the engine bay.

I have a '94 FZJ80 as well...

Mine is RARE because the "D" on the cluster panel doesn't light up anymore, both my hood struts are shot (needs replacement), I had a leak on the notorious sun roof (but it's fixed now), I had water build up under my rocker panels on both side when the rain pours (but thanks to that search button on mud-it's now fixed) and my front pax side window slowly goes up but goes down fast!:D:mad:

Haha that's great. Ours share many of the same symptoms.

To answer the question above, yes sunroof and fender flares.

This site and the people on it has certainly made working on my rig a pleasure. That and the fact it is an old school Yota.

One other thing the original poster mentioned was no VC (viscous coupler). Is your truck somehow not full-time 4wd? All USA FJs and FZJs came with a VC, Which facilitates the full time 4WD. Some have been removed to install a part time system. This would be the only rarity I would identify, if it were factory. The only other reason not to have a VC is simply if it seized and is always active. (Not good in full time 4WD).

She is full time 4wd. I was having problems previously with the center differential not unlocking. Driving was not pleasant. I traced it down to a faulty center diff actuator. Found one in pristine condition from a junkyard for under $100. Lucky.

Anyway back when all of that started I thought it could have been a seized VC but beno and others said no based on my transfer case. See below.

My last cruiser was one of the bastardized 94s. I sold mine a year ago for $5400, so I'd say you made a good purchase. Transitional, yeah but still a great truck....

Yeah I don't mind. Are there ones with better options out there??? Sure. But this is mine and its the best rig I have ever driven.

Lets hope I don't get antsy in a few months!

Look at the ones in Australia ..
Dual aux tank and or a rear ac setup
Ambulance style doors

Or japan ones with seat warmer and no 3rd row and all of these can be diesel or gas

FJ80's don't have VC's.

Mine came new from the factory with the delete 'D' light on the dash option so I exercised that option many, many years ago! :flipoff2:

Another 80 mudder in Ct. Nice. Look into our local club, Yankee Toys . Many good times awaiting you.

Yeah I need to do that. I have two little ones at home, any free time I have at the moment is for wrenching.

I was out in single digits fixing the CDL actuator and the EGR. Oh yeah...10 pm and later.
