Hello Everyone,

Hopefully someone can shed some light to my situation. For the past two, three weeks my 99 landcrusher has been randomly shutting off as i'm driving every two or three days. Looses power then shuts down but starts right back up no problem. Any one have this problem?

Does the whole dash go dark?
Any dash lights on?
Engine stops completely or just looses power?

I've had this issue twice offroad. No lights, no codes, nothing is wrong. Always seems to be when the passenger side is lower. I have checked all fluids and at the time the tank was 3/4th full. Stalled in low range 1st gear first time, and low range "D" second time. I have cleaned MAF, TB, air filter, and battery checked out OK. You may (and I as well) need to clean/replace the fuel filter. Now that I say that, could sediment shift and clog the filter for a second or two?

It just shuts off. All lights on dash on. Right before it shuts off I loose power i give it throttle no response then it shuts off. But it starts right back up no problem. I've changed fuel filter had the throttle body cleaned, injectors cleaned. but still have that problem.

Good point Nick, anybody know exactly where the in tank pickup is? Usually they are screened and may well get covered with crud in the tank temporarily.
Landcrusher, if possible pull your tank and check it next time you're near 'E'. I have an old CJ with a JC Whitney tank that spews paint flakes like crazy, use a glass filter to watch it pile up and clean over and over... not so easy with a high pressure injected vehicle though.

Mine has done this as well. Once on the highway in stop and go and once in trail in low range but in park.

When it happened on trail I was having pretty obvious coal canister issues causing a harsh gas smell and a pressurized gas tank. I had the gas cap off to keep the pressure down.

Next day after complete cool down I drove it 600 miles without issue and no coal canister issues...maybe that's a clue?

Mine did it twice last week on the trail, low range I was full throttle up a steep incline and once I reached the top and leveled out it died. I s*** as I was deep in the woods. Fired back up twice. Never had failed prior.

Highly doubt it's a pick up at you'd have to consume a substantial amount of fuel in the lines to get it to shut down.

I had over 3/4 of a tank.

Not so sure because as soon as you cover the pump intake the pump can start to cavitate leaving bubbles that just don't get the job done and tend to clog up filters temporarily until fuel pressure returns. I'm not ready to rule out anything yet.

Is there possibly a roll sensor that shuts off fuel flow?

A check valve internal to the charcoal canister that is nonfunctional due to vehicle angle or other failure? That would cause abnormal fuel pressures as well.

A lot of these seem to happen on trails only.

a week has gone by and no shut off till last night. Turned right back on no problem. This morning as i was driving my son to his football game the engine light came on. checked for code and came up with P0171 System to lean(Bank 1). Is this an 02 sensor and which one? I believe there's four in our vehicles.:wrench:

Well this morning i started the landcrusher and as i was pulling out it sputtered like crazy kinda misfiring or starving for fuel. After getting engine light. i checked for code and got p0171. it could of been a number of things so i desided to take it to a local shop and it turns out that it wasnt getting enough fuel. fuel pump was going. that could explain the engine stall occationaly till it finaly gave out. Hope this fixes the occational shut off. i guess you expect that after 215k mile on the beast.
