Just shakin' out the bugs on the new ride and have noticed the new 350 SBC ramjet runs a bit hot. Have an aftermarket aluminum 4 core radiator with mechanical fan and shroud. Thermostat functions in boiling pan of water.

Engine gets to about 230 degrees after a 15 minute session of 10 mph or less, 2,000 rpm or less. Haven't taken ot up to any speed yet, still adjusting brakes and such.

We've been told breakin' in a new engine will run a bit hot in the initial stages.

Any truth to that thought?

could be true, try a lower thermostat,it will run hot if you have an air bubble in the system

Your shroud could be the issue. Have you considered an electric fan. I alway had problems keeping my rig cool. I switched out the shroid and mechanical fan for a high cfm fan. The truck always runs at 180. My motor is built too.

1) a brand new or freshly rebuilt engine can and will run hotter than usual. make sure you go thru the proper break-in procedure. most engine and cam manufacturers or rebuilders recommend breaking in the engine/new cam at 2500 rpm for about 20-30 minutes. you can do so while driving or while sitting still. if you're doing it while sitting still, make sure to put a large fan in front of the truck to generate some air flow.

2) that fan shroud sucks. sorry bud, but you're gonna need a real shroud. the fan should be half way in the shroud and the blades should be no more than 2" from the shroud in order for it to be effective.

3) run a clutch fan. flex fans don;t work nearly as well and they make a ton of noise.

4) what size is your exhaust

5) x2 on the air in the system. try to bleed it out.

Installed the same engine in my project without any heat issues. The temp comes up to 180 and holds there without fail. I do have a clutch fan, aluminum radiator, and fan shroud. Engine has around 100 miles road time. I'll attach a picture of my shroud to indicate the difference.:)

hey centerlineseal i will be in kuna on the 23 of july to aug 12th. i have a 7 blade fan with the clutch out of a caddy if you want it ? i will bring it along on the trip to the wifes families place. just PM me if interested because i have no use for it.

Well now! Just figured out I have a standard rotation fan on a reverse-rotation waterpump. Double   Serpentine belt system comes with reverse-rotation waterpump and the regular waterpump must be replaced. So, now to find the exact right thickness clutch and fan at Summit.

bawahahahaha, that happend to a buddy of mine years ago. he could'nt figure out why his rig was overheating. he stopped by so we could look at it and there was hot air blowing on us while standing in front of the truck...........

i was going to mention the rotation of the fan but it's a fairly uncommon issue.

either way, hope you get it taken care of. i'm confident you will.
