Was there a FJ 40 option for a radio in 69? I have a radio that appears to have been sold new with the cruiser. Knobs a in reverse order of anything I have seen. It was mounted under the dash on the left of the stering wheel.

Never heard of a factory radio anywhere other than in the dash, above the heater.
If it is AM/FM it is NOT factory. All factory radios were AM only.
Also, where is it's speaker(s), factory speaker location was in the glovebox.

I have not heard of a radio option until '74, but that does not mean that a dealer could not have installed something..

John will probably have much more info on this...

Oh, Mr. Pimp.... ;)

When I took delivery of my FJ40 from the dealer in 1972, it had an AM radio mounted under the dash in a braket, and an antenna on the passenger side ahead of the door. COuld be solely a dealer thing, tho" I beileve it was an option on the price list.

Radio became option in Sept 1972, IIRC (1973 model year). Anything before that was non-oem.

If its made by TEN(as is Fijusi(sp) Ten, they make the OEM radios to this day, Eclispe also made by them) then its a Toyota radio. There were some bolt on underdash radios offered by Toyota before the dash had the hole for the radio. My 67 fj45 came with an original TEN speaker(in metal box) mounted up under the dash, above the driver side kick vent, it "might" have been added latter but its VERY old and diffferent then the OEM speaker mounted in my fj40's, it had no radio however.

So if it says TEN......its a Toyota, anything else prolly isn't

I might be wrong, but I beleive in '79 they had am/fm. I took mine out a few months ago, above the heater in the usual place. Had all the toyota markings on it. Still worked. sold it on ebay to help finance a new CD player.

It is a TEN, I guess it was added as a aftermarket by Toyota. I will have to hook power to it and see if she plays.

Toyota prolly had add on type unit that they used in lots of early rigs(Stouts and others stuff) not just cruisers, so yep its OEM but not really stock......but dang close. What is there for a speaker? if you have a pic of the radio I would like to see it.

In the 68 Toyota Crown that is running around town it has a AM/FM OEM TEN radio with a auto search feature(the knob and needle move....its cool)......its vintage 1968 and works like new

in the hip 1970;s you could get a OEM 8 Track that mounted under the dash, also a Toyota CB radio.

and if I recall correctly the OEM AM radio is my 82 fj40 is backwards as well.

I found a pic of the TEN speaker in my 67 fj45

My 79 had only AM, I replaced it with an Alpine cd/mp3 player in a Tuffy box. (I overdid it on the stereo, 1400 watts, but it sounds very good)
