Are there any direct drive cooling fans available to install on the FJ60? I recently had to replace the fan clutch on mine, and I think the replacement clutch is delivering questionable service probably due to less than high quality manufacture / engineering. I was thinking of just installing an "old" style direct bolt on fan without the integral clutch, but can't really locate any sources. Thought someone might have some experience with this installation. If you do, let me know.
You can replace the fluid in the original and get it working properly again (there is at least one good thread on this in the 80s section). Or you can take it apart and fill it with epoxy or rtv or the like and turn it into a solid unit.
I would fix or replace your fan clutch over running a flex fan or "direct drive" fan. I think there were fixed fans in markets where no A/C was standard. I'm sure you could adapt a flex fan or something else but its best to just stay with the OEM fan and OEM fan clutch.
The fan clutch gives you the best of two ideal senarios. First, when hot, it locks up and is then directly linked to the most powerful fan motor that you could possibly have; your engine. No electric fan will ever match that. Second, when not needed it unlocks and "windmills" in the breeze. You should keep it.
buy a new OEM fan clutch, dont get a "rebuilt" and be done with it, take my word for it.
IMOP its not worth messing with replacing the fluid. the fluid is really meant to be used with certain older(non LC) fan clutches that REQUIRED you fill it as part of the install. the silicone fluid also comes in different "flavors"
I have tried it in the past, matter of fact if you look WAY back I think it was my parts guy that was one of the few that even knew it existed. If the FC is bad, its prolly other than the fluid....stuff just wears out after you know.....20-30 years
If you make it a solid fan....it will suck power and make a bunch of added noise(I know as my 64 FJ45 is that way stock)
Sure. Most FJ55s used a direct drive fan, I'm using one now on my 2F in my Pig.
You'd need the drive flange off the waterpump that matches the spacer, pulley, and fan. Shouldn't be too hard to find those arts at swapmeets or the 'Mud classifieds.
I'll let the others talk you out of it, getting the pulleys to line up might be fun, but I don't see an reason why you couldn't bolt a direct drive fan onto your 2F.
