Hi Guys, any idea how a R151F 5 speed gearbox holds up behind the turbo'd 1HZ or 1HDT?

All the newer HDJ81's must have the 151 in them - any news on premature failure? The HZJ79's with 1HDT'd should have them as well.

Regards,

Gday
They hold up fine for most people, in my experience.
Im sure someone here will have had a problem, or have heard of a problem, tho.
What are you planning?

Matt

I have a 151 behind my 1HZ now, it could use a rebuild as it has had a hard life. I want to add a turbo the engine but it is a high time engine as well - so, I am thinking about bringing in an HZJ73 from japan for a low time donor engine. So I either bring in the HZJ73 with 1HZ/H55F 5 speed and turbo it, or use the r151 and rebuild it here. I like the r151 as it is a pretty smooth tranny.

But, if there is going to be a chance of tranny problems then I will just swap the whole thing out.

Will the h55f mount up easily or will a bunhc of tranny hump and cross member work have to be done?

Regards,

Gday
There are 1000s of 1HZs with aftermarket turbos (many with intercoolers) and R151s, going fine, around the world.
Have you done a compression test on your engine?
It would be hard to go back to a truck G.box after a 150 or 151, IMHO.
Do you have money burning a hole in your pocket?;)
Heres a pic of some 450000km old 1HZ BEBs, that had a turbo installed at around 150000km. This car had a sketchy service history all its life.
Have fun

I better add here that that engine just got slapped back together with a new water pump, head gasket, and cam seal.
No point spending $700 on a rebuild kit, or pre.com chambers. ;)

after driving the H151, the R151 and years of driving the H55F i would take the H55F over the other two in a heart beat.
the H55F is perfect gear spacing for a turbo, quiet, perfect shifting... a beautiful work of art in my not so humble opinion...

Would the shifter position and mounting be in the same spot wayne? I would think they should be very close.

I haven't done a compression test yet, soon though. The compression will be fine I am sure, has plenty of power, no smoke, I changed the BEB bearings and they were fine. The engine has 4200 hours on it - of very hard use, hard revs. But now it sounds like a diesel engine, you know - clattery, not valve clicky though. Piston slap or main bearing wear?

I was going to turbo it but that engine still has some good life in it without a turbo, someone would be able to use it when I am done with it.

Wayne, I'll need one of those mapped turbos in the fall, stage 2 of the project will be underway in Oct/Nov.

Pics to come.

i never bothered to check but it is just a bit of metal work to fabricate a new tower hole in the floor

looking forward to the pics and a test ride when i get down there.

if you want the turbo then best set it up in the next month or a bit, i am out of here in late August, back for a week for wheeling on sept long then permentaly in Ontario after that

ok sounds good, it all rides on the cash flow at this point, alot of work and cash has gone into this truck. You will like the ride, I think it is smoother than the HDJ81 with OME. I just had rock sliders installed yesterday and the winch is being installed today, custom setup. The sliders are out of rollcage material as will be the bumper extensions, based on some australian designs I have seen on the outback challenge video. I am running the aisin factory winch but will be switching to the 8274 when I blow this up.

Reading this thread I'm get a littkle confusion about trannys .. 1HD-T 81series come with R151 ..? Here no other option than the H151 and 1HZ with the H150.

difference in shifter placing between the two is a fair amount, the R tranny is about 4" longer overall and the shifter is right near the back, where the H tranny has the shifter just in front of the midway point. but that is of no concern i would think, the punchout in the sheetmetal might even be there.

Ah, you are right - there is a punch out for it - now i remember.

Tapage, Toyota made many tranny/engine combinations over the years and in different countries. The HZJ79's got a 1HZ R151F in them in some countries. I like that tranny, very smooth, but just want to make sure it will hold up to the torque of a 1HDT or turboed 1HZ.

Louis I have some pics of the HDJ79 shifter position. Unfortunately the vehicle was locked but it may give you some idea.
The one with the carpet is the HDJ79 and should have the H151 and the other is a HZJ78 with a R151.

Both have a hole in the floor that could be adapted to suit either tranny I think.

Lets see if I have an underneath pic:D
Ah yes I do but I cant remember if its the HZJ or HDJ shifter,I think its the HZJ78.
I think the H151 is longer and uses some kind of extension on the t/case shifter so its sits pretty much in the same location as the R151 gearbox and t/case.

I know Toyota make incridible and unexplicable thinks for us .. in many countries.

My next question is .. and I thought the H series trannys are much more strong than R series ..

Yes they are ,thats why the 1F FE,1HD FTE and 1VD T use the H 151.

Good to know Ross, thanks for the pics and info, I'm on the fence about this although I will probably bring in a parts rig and just you a 1HZ/H55F combo and be done with it. I can even buy the tranny hump cut out for the different shifter position if I want it to be more "factory" like - which I always do.
