R151F behind a turbo'd 1HZ or 1HDT

Good to know Ross, thanks for the pics and info, I'm on the fence about this although I will probably bring in a parts rig and just you a 1HZ/H55F combo and be done with it. I can even buy the tranny hump cut out for the different shifter position if I want it to be more "factory" like - which I always do.

There is a few owners on the exploroz forum who have turboed their HZJ105 only to find the R151 not up to the job and wanting info on a H151 instal.

If you want to go with the H55f I think you will need everything from the flywheel back.

Or maybe use a H150?

I'm going to assume premature wear? Not sure if we can get H151 or 150 here?

when you say the R151 didn't "hold up" what was it that broke?

Mainly the output splines but also the synchroes and bearings.
I think Toyota did some mod to improve them but they are still dying like flies.
I spoke to a gearbox rebuilder and he said they just give up everywhere.
Even those not used in the workplace dont last.
Its well documented on aussie sites.
My brother is a supervisor at one of the largest underground gold mines(200 cruisers) and it got that bad they called a meeting with Toyota and asked them to start using the H55f gearbox again.

hummm, that sucks...

From what I remember the output shaft was a 3 piece affair until 03 when they made it as a single piece.
Maybe I over exaggerated its failures but it does have a bad record. You can find owners who say they have done 200000 klms and no problems but there are others who talk about 2-3 rebuilds in 150000klm.

Problem with these kind of things on the net is everyone claims they are a "careful driver":D

comm on, i am the carefulest (is that a word?) of the careful when it comes to driving...
i am soooo gentle on my trucks....i can get 2 mil on each truck (mm that is)

i know i have put VERY few km on the R151 or the R141 so i have little experience. i have found the R151 gear ratios not to my liking...i do like the R141 gear ratio for the larger tires behind the 1PZ...

I have 6 hours of driving to get to my camp so I like the ighway speed I can get out of this truck with the 4.30's. I also find the 1st gear low to be pretty low - not sure what the actual gearing is though. Anyone have the gear ratios for the r151h?

R151
1st 4.313
2nd 2.330
3rd 1.436
4th 1.000
5th 0.838
reverse 4.220

R141
ist 4.843
2nd 2.618
3rd 1.516
4th 1.000
5th none
Reverse 4.843

H151
1st 4.529
2nd 2.454
3rd 1.490
4th 1.000
5th 0.881

ummm, the speed limit is 110 k/h anyway...right? or are you one of these "street racers" we are reading about down in Ontario?
LOL!!

LOL, well, you got me! If I can do 110kms/hr for most of it I am happy, the last 12Kms takes about 2 hours though - so high gears arent a factor.

One last question, ok maybe 2, what is the gearing for the H55? And I am interested in your turbo setup, didn't you post a topic about an install? Which post was that?

Thanks.

the H55F is the same ratios as the R141 plus 5th is 0.8 something...
yes, the install is the same for both the PZ and the HZ...i am not sure where the link is right now...sorry

I remember from mind that 1st it's 4.84 and 5th it's .83 - .84 .. :D I hope can be longer ..

The R141 has me confused. You dont mean a H141 by any chance??

If you already have a R151 up and running ,go with that and see how it stands up;)

lol, well there is some bearing noise now, still shifts nicely though. So instead of paying 1K to rebuild it I was wondering if I should just put the money towards a fresher 1hz/tranny/transfer combo from Japan.

Well they are descended from a Supra box:D

nope the R141, it is the 4 speed tranny that came behind the PZ mine trucks

Hi Louis, how is your gearbox holding up? I broke my transfer rear output shaft at 318k km without turbo for its whole life. Other than that, the gearbox shifts smoothly.

The R151 holds up fine. As mentioned the only real difference apart from gearing is the spline count. The H151 is always the preferred and strongest gear box.
