Just got another today so this is timely.

That cinder block wall looks familiar.

Do you work in porn?

I'm in on this, but have a question.

Is the input and concern here the same as other forums you're marketing in?

Just curious.

What do you guys think about this one? There are springs on the shoulder bolts that will force the lever off of the clamp halves once it is in the unlocked position, and also a tapered entry on the holes to prevent the lock from catching on the underside of the bolts. I've added two sets of holes which will allow the lever to be installed so that the handle is either parallel with the extinguisher, or perpendicular to it when it's in the locked position, depending on what works best for your situation. It will unlock with only 45 degrees of rotation to keep it quick. I've also added a slight cam action to the lever which will pull the clamps toward each other and pinch the extinguisher even tighter when you lock it.

If we modify the mount to add this feature it will be $10 more, so the total would be ~$65 if this is what everyone wants.

I'm kinda lost- thought the original design was just having it clamp shut; what prompted the extra "latch" on the front side?

clutch

That latch doesn't really add much security in my mind, it wouldn't take much shifting of cargo to knock that lever and have the spring powered bolts launch it off to be lost, opening the clamp. Now you need a pin to keep the latch from turning. Too complex, too much stuff to go wrong.

I'd rather have the original with no lock.

If you're going to put something in that location on the front of the clamp, just use a pull pin. Machine a vertical tunnel on one wing of the clamp and two vertical tunnels on the other, so they line up when it's closed, and drop a pin in from above. Put the pin on a lanyard wire so it won't be lost when you pull it.

^Agreed^

Your solution is clever but I think your completely over thinking its complexity.

One other thing to address would be slight varied sizes of extinguishers. Yooper's idea could have some slop designed into it as could mine. The security pin does not have to necessarily provide a tighter fit. Just prevent the original design from releasing the its cargo.

Most importantly it needs to be completely idiot proof for a stupid adult or smart child to figure it out inside of a smoke filled cabin.

Yes, the original design is intended to eliminate the need for any other pin or locking mechanism. I personally don't think it is necessary, but it has been expressed here, and on another forum (mostly from guys who race and have to pass track side inspection) that some would like a way to lock it. I was just trying to give people what they want.

Didn't even think about track inspection. Hmm, there are some runs thats require extinguishers but don't know if they check the mounting.

That is a pretty simple design but $140 just for the mounting bracket?!?! The one thing I personally don't like about that type of a design is that the only thing that holds it in the bracket is the one pin alone. Repeated miles, on or off the road, bouncing around will most likely cause it to start rattling around in the bracket. This may not be a big deal if all you do is bounce around off road where other things are rattling, but since I designed my mount for my personal use in my street car, I wanted it to be something that couldn't rattle around and be an annoyance in my car. I have seen another one that is very similar to the ones you posted above, but much, much lower quality. Right now they're on sale for $200 or so, but are regularly $255. Considering that, I feel like I'll be giving these away at $55, but that is just my opinion.

Yeah $140 is a bit steep, but it all depends on who the target market is. As NLXTACY said, these Clamps and Extinguishers are used in the ICON FJ's. I have been lusting over these trucks and the fine details put into them for some time now.

I love the form as much as I love the function! The design is lacking a bit as you said. If your model looks this sexy or better and has a better design with better function for under $100 I would be highly interested. The question is at what price point do you market and design for? If you design them to be produced and sold at 50 bucks you might sell 4 times as many than if you go for the better more complex design sold at 100 bucks. Personally I really like your original design, but it just isn't safe in a vehicle. The good news is that you can sell them for a million different applications. Then take the same parts and add in the safety lock. For a few more bucks you have two versions of the same clamp. One for auto, boat, motorized vehicle use and the original design for basic home, garage, kitchen, office use. Better yet I wouldn't even build them. Use a licensing agreement and sell the idea/plans to all of the Extinguisher manufacturing companies. They could even be built out of cheaper materials like hard plastics to be used in home type applications. Anyways I really like the idea. Lots of ways to go with it with lots of opportunities, but before you do that please build some for us :grinpimp:

I agree. You have some great design skills, but it needs to be bulletproof and butt simple. And for me it has to lock, period. It's doable. I built one in an afternoon with some aluminum and a few other bits. It's not rocket science, but keeping a sleek design like you have gets tough.

Here's the one I made (it went to new home with cargo platform). No rattles, totally secure, and just yank the yellow webbing when it's go time.
