Tried to crank the 97 cruiser up today and the ignition is stuck..the wheel is locked and the tires are turned fully to the right...i cant get the ignition to budge. What can I do?

Rock the steering wheel side to side while turning the key - this normally should get you going. If you've already tried this, try again harder!!! (before calling a locksmith :) )

Ive yanked about as hard as I comfortbly feel like doing...Should I try harder...I dont want to break anything.

Grab the steering wheel and try to turn it. You will likely find that it will not move in one direction but will turn slightly in the other with some effort.

Turn it slightly to take the pressure off of the "loaded" side and that should relieve the bind in the steering lock.

I got it broken loose by doing exactly what you descried...thanks everyone...apparently the GF was getting out of my cruiser after driving it all day and grabbed the wheel as she slid out thus putting a good hard turn on it.... Weird thing is that I had to use my other key (the valet key) as I could not get my normal key to work.....my normal key works perfect now that the wheel is not at full lock....is this a signal to get a new OEM key cut from the dealer

Also time to lube the lock, my locksmith buddy recommends silicone dry spray, hose it in the keyhole and work the key in and out, on and off before it dries.
