So on wednesday the 8th my fiance and I will be heading to estes park colorado to get married in the 80. I bought axle seals a while back to change out. I'm currently at work (ambulance district) on a 24 hr shift. Gonna have to try to change them out tonight in the garage after everyone is asleep. Can you point me in the direction of the thread on how to do this task only. And how much time it will take. Been running emergency calls all day and thats why i havent had time to search much. Oop Tones gotta go any answer would be appreciated.

To put the axles seals in you need to take the whole thing apart and it will take you about 2 days to do it
Sorry

axles seals you mean knuckle seals . ? dude .. that would take few hours .. of cleaning and since youa re there you might check bearings and inner axle oil seal ..

It all depends on how good with a wrench he is
That is alot of disasembly

inner axle seal

done w/ call, thanks for the replies, consider myself not to bad w/ a wrench i now have a little oil slung around inside of driverside front tire. diff fluid level is good sample of inner birf grease was still redish in color. I added greese to inner birf about 10,000 miles ago to be safe. does not appear milky. Ill just run it and take parts w/ me and monitor situation, brake fluid is still good as well w/ no obvious leaks. BTW, 96 fzj80 w/ 207,000 miles. Gonna pull both axles when we get back from honeymoon to do birf job as well as clean up to paint. thanks for the info guys.

You should be fine until you get back.

Only thing I'd consider doing if you have time before you go is changing out the diff. fluid.

If you're slinging grease, it might be worth popping the pipe cap plug on that side & confirming you are spinning the birfs in a decent level of grease, sounds like you know the ones I'm talking of if you saw your color / quality of grease & may have done that already though.

If you have grease/oil on the inside of your brake rotor, I would blast it off with some brake cleaner before you go. Make sure to clean the brake pad as well.

Later on, when your ready to pick a grease for your Birfs:

You mentioned red grease in the birf housing, most greases that contain molybdenum look grey/black. FSM specifies a lithium grease with molybdenum additive (most prefer 2% or more). Non moly grease will get you by fine in the meantime though (and probably longer).

Yeah... use the best grease & seal you can get. Take yr time on the inner axle seal job

Congrats on the wedding, looks like you had a nice day for it. If the truck takes a quick turn south shoot me a PM and I'll swing by and help you fix it.
