I am going to pick up some grease/lube/brake fluid for my attempt at changing my front rotors and rebuilding my front calipars. However, I am at work and forgot the specs on what I need to pick up.

Can anyone let me knwo what kind of brake calipar piston grease, regular grease, and brake fluid i need to get. (ie weight..or whatever it is called)

I am going to try to get to toy dealership before it closes..however,there is a good chance I wuill end up getting thisstuff in either Pep boys or Autozone..

1996 80 series.

Joe,

For brake grease, you'll want ..... Disk brake grease. Brand isn't important.

For regular grease, use a HD grease rated for high speed use in wheel bearings. I prefer Amsoil synthetic but any good wheel bearing grease will do.

For brake fluid, I prefer Valvoline synthetic. It is for DOT-3

The caliper rebuild kit comes with appropriate grease. Standard disc brake wheel bearing grease is fine for the wheel bearings. DOT3 brake fluid. Good opportunity to flush the brake fluid while you're at it.
 
Ok..so i got the kit today (thanks dan). I cracked open the calipar..pretty straight forward . You mentioned the brake grease comes in the calipar kit. That is the little packet of pinkish goop..correct? I just use that to grease up the pistons right? Or do i do something else with it?

Ok..I got the grease and brake fluid. I am using bake cleaner spray to clean up the pistons/calipars.

put back together and done.

These are my BRAKES!...stopping is important!

Joe, The rebuild procedure is outlined in the service manual, but there isn't much to it. The hard part is getting the pistons out. Less is more with the grease. There isn't much available. Light coating on the pistons and o-rings.
 
Joe,

You will also want to clean up the slide pins and lube them with anti-seize. Clean them really good with a brillo pad or scotch pad. Get them shiny and slick then use the anti-seize when installing the new pads.

Junk..thanks for the offer. i was in Ocean Grove all day..just got back. I am rebuilding the calipar tonight..pretty straight forward. But..i might need some advice if i run into issues tommorow with rotor swap.

B..thanks for the hint on scrubbing those good call.. That is one of those tips that you say 'Darn..i should have cleaned those off"..after you installed them!
