Hello everyone, I'm in the market to replace an old Lexus LS with a '21-24 lightly used Tundra and having never owned one or knowing much about Tundra configurations, I'm hoping to get some info and advice from anyone knowledge about them.

Buying criteria:
- 2021-2024 year model
- Smoked Mesquite color (I think this means either Limited, Platinum, or 1794 trims only?)
- 32 gallon gas tank (I guess the 38 gal tank is no longer an option on this generation?)
- 4x4, non-hybrid (gas only) engine
- factory blacked-out trim (e.g., grille trim is all black or paint-matched, no silver/chrome anywhere)
- < 20k miles

Questions:
- Is the TRD off-road package worth considering as a criteria? All I really care about is 4wd and limited-slip rear diff -- if locking diff is option that would be great of course
- What key criteria might I be missing? Are there any issues with specific year models or trim levels, etc that I should look out for when shopping?
- I plan to buy the truck and then have a dealer install the TRD/toyota 3" lift kit -- any issues with this?
- Any other thoughts or advice for what I should be looking for given my draft criteria

Thank you!

I think you may be disappointed with quality and dependability, especially with the first two model years (2022-23). Unless the intended purpose of the truck is circling around dealership, or at least be reachable for flat bed. For overleanding/offroading better get a V8, these last forever with basic maintenance.

I'd agree, proceed with Caution.. I only wanted CPO and Hybrid for the noted challenges... and that's not a failsafe...

I went with a TRD PRO and like the tech and interior - and the wheel well are capable of a 37" with limited mods... the fit and finish isn't great and the metal on hood and doors is notably thin... my hood has disturbing flex at 90+...

all that said it handles damn well, and covers ground nicely....

I'll have the TRD/Fox shocks and UCA's avail for sale shortly.... about 35k on the set - no salt TX miles and garaged...
I'm also about to list the TRD BBS rims/ and a set of new 295/70/18 Duratracs....( also have mint set of 285/65/18 BFG KO2's that came on the truck - 1600 miles on them)

I really wanted to go prior gen with a V8 but it's hard to find good ones with the configuration that I want also with very low miles, and since I typically keep vehicles for 20+ years, I decided on the newer gen for better or worse...

Nice truck! And thanks for the feedback on it -- I've got a '23 sequoia and noticed the same thing regarding fit and finish unfortunately.. I'm going to prob leave the truck (once I have one) all stock until its time for new tires, then try to get the TRD 3" lift unless I talk myself into a cheaper/simpler 2" leveling kit.

20+ years? It is your money at the end, but I would at least wait for one more year, if not two, to make sure Toyota finally fixed they defective V35A-FTS engine.

It seems the recall for the troublesome engines covered pre-2024 models, but there still seems to be issues reported for the 2024, but at a low frequency. I'm prob going to go with a '24 Limited w/ TRD OR package -- comes in the color I'm after and checks all the other boxes. There's a few for sale with low miles. Wish me luck..

Good luck. Have InReach ready.

I'll have my TRD Pro shocks/ springs and arms avail soon....... 37's are calling..... will also have the rims/ and 295 Duratracs available in a month or less....

Update: Did some more research on the trim levels/options/packages and found exactly what I wanted:

2024 Limited w/TRD OR package,14k miles, single-owner, from the southern US/clean, mesquite smoke, gas only 4x4, crewmax with short-bed.

The engine issues may still affect a small % of the 2024 models but I'm not worried about it -- the incidence rate for the 2022-2023s seems to be around 1-2% of all sold to date. Will report back with feedback to this thread once I get some miles on it.

Update: got the truck, and thankfully it was exactly as described. So far very pleased with it and thought I'd offer some first impressions after a couple months of daily driving.

General: drives/feels like a truck much more than I anticipated based on my experience with the new gen Sequoia (i.e., I was expecting it to handle/feel a lot like the sequoia, but the sequoia is smoother, prob from more weight distributed across and to the rear). Limited edition is my sweet spot bc it has less creature comforts and is more basic/functional. Zero codes, zero weirdness/noises, and no issues with anything at all so far.

Pro: power/launch/engine-performance is very impressive, and just like the sequoia the shift points are almost entirely unnoticeable unless paying attention to them (as expected). Very stable and responsive handling and cornering with excellent higher speed/highway manners. Sound dampening of road noise is good, not great and same story for fit/finish (coming from Lexus world my bar is high for this though). Internal feel is nice balance between 'how a truck should be' and reasonable amount of modern comforts (seat heat/cool, powered seats, good AC, sound system, etc).

Cons: auto/stop start has to be disabled with an aftermarket dongle/delete-kit (unless you want to press the stupid button each drive). gas milage in city under normal drive mode is poor (12-14 mpg). Milage on highway is fair though (18+ mpg). turning radius is awful -- this is my single biggest complaint by far. Minor annoyance is the goofy shark fin antenna on the back of the roof (loss of clearance in parking decks). external trim has too much flimsy plastic parts and hood/body panel metal seems surprisingly thin and easy to dent.

I'll have my TRD PRO setup avail in a few weeks - think the only change to the Seq. is the rear springs and you could probably get the Dobinsons to get cover that ... I'm adding in a set of theirs to get a bit more lift and handle the Decked setup's weight and other stuff....

Just curious, why disable the auto off feature. Are you worried about wearing out your starter motor prematurely or just the start/stop thing creeping you out? Do you think Toyota installed these to say how they are "earth friendly"? Maybe following some kind of Federal mandate?? I had a toyota sales rep recently try and sell me on the idea that they were going to more 4cyl/hybrids to be more earth conscience. I thought for a minute that I was in a Subaru dealership, which ironically was right next to the Toyota dealer.
