my 71 fj40 has an old pto winch on it. inside there is a big ugly knob on the dash (like as big as a door knob) you're supposed to pull to make it work. so i pulled it and used it fine. but now the knob won't go back in. what's wrong and how to fix it? also, can i replace that ugly knob? i don't see how it comes off.

Picture?

Sounds like the old Ramsey PTO winch. The PTO
gearbox is on the rear of the transfer case and
the connection is a cable, not solid linkage (
I think).

ding!
rgentry is right. ramsey/rhino system. clown knob (usually mounted near ignition key) is for cable to PTO. As for a replacement- I don't know.

Be fun to see a picture.

Miles, if the knob doesn't go back in, does that mean you're stuck and the PTO is the only thing that runs? Or is it off now with the knob pulled out? You may just have pulled the cable off the other end and now it is jammed. Get under the truck and look at the PTO.

you're right, the cable goes back to an arm on the transfer case, and that arm is locked up. i can't budge it. the vehicle seems to drive fine, but what should i do? i don't have a digital camera yet to take a picture. just trust me, it's ugly.
