I was at a standstill waiting on inner C clip for my R front axle and it came in. (thanks to FJparts) Back to working on the front disc brake swap this afternoon and I have some questions which someone may be able to help.

I finished removing the gasket material from the axle housing and figured I should inspect the planetary bearings. Which brings me to my questions and apologies, I am unsure of the precise terminology so I will add photos. I did remove the caps and inspect the races and bearings, they seem great to me. the first picture - it hit me I need to return the caps to the correct side, was going to mark it but notice one cap had 17 on it and the other side 18 - that was good enough but I took pics anyway.

  • Here is my question. It seemed when I rotated the pinion ring before I removed the caps, there was a slight travel before it engaged. Should there be any, I am going to call it lash in the gear mesh? If no, do I take it up by tightening the threaded rings that are locked by the tabs on the top of the bearing housing?
  • I set up a micrometer to see how much travel the pinion moves before it meshes with the drive shaft (prolly flubbing this but hopefully you can see what I mean.

  • I used a 2x to block the flange for the U-Joint and set this up to check travel, I was getting .60-.67mm it is hard to get a stable and the first set up, before I blocked the U-joint flange was 1.2-1.7mm of travel but my grip was unsteady.
Thoughts? Should I tighten the threaded cup on the bearing housing stamped 17 in the photo above to take up this slack to where it is smooth with no slop?

Do you have a Factory Service Manual(FSM)? You can find 1 to download. You probably should have checked the backlash b4 removing the caps, so you can reassemble it like it was.
In your case just set the backlash within specs. The bearing caps need to go back in the same positions.

That spurred me to spend a morning figuring out where I laid that manual and I did find it. Thank you, that fixed it. All back together and refilled, torqed to specs and within backlash.
