question on gas caps (FJ40)

Good news from you guys. Drilling a small hole in the cap is looking more attractive all the time. I'd rather not have to drop the tank out to check the top for venting.

gas cap changes?

looking at CCOT, this is the gas cap I bought. I noticed they say it fits 71-77. What changed after 77? My FJ40 is 78 so maybe this cap is wrong for it? What was different with regards to the gas tank system between 77 and 78

1978 FJ40 gas filler necks are apparently some sort of oddball. That's why 78 fill necks can be worth a few dollars. I assume the cap is odd as well. The number on the package in my earlier post is current for a 78 cap from Toyota. I just bought it as a spare. It's silver vs. the earlier gold colored ones but otherwise seems identical.

Sorry, I was BSing in the driveway with a buddy. Here you go...

again, ccot. this one looks just like yours. CCOT claims this fits 77-83! Seems odd to span those years. who knows?!

CCOT is the last place I'd rely on for factual data. They appear to think that everything is interchangeable.

What those dates say to me is that 78 was the last year of gas tanks in the cab but the first year of some change to the fill neck/cap area. Maybe to accommodate unleaded fuel?

KillerPea: In addition to the above, you've probably got a hole or loose clamp in your fuel lines or maybe the vent line to the canister. Your pressure build-up is not being vented correctly by the canister and has found another way out!

I agree that I have some sort of blockage. I was just getting ready to try to start tracking down how the evap system is laid out on a 78 when I found an excellent description of it. https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/299272-problems-cannister-i-think.html
Thanks Numby.
