Question about light switch

I pulled out my knob and the shaft from the light switch. It has a notched end. The question is how do it get it back together? Did I break it?
yes this is the dumb question, thats why I placed it in someones elses thread.

If it's anything like a '78, the shaft is not supposed to come out. I fear she's dead, Jim. SOR has one for sure if you can't get one through the wanted forum.
