FJ40/60 axle if you want the stronger third member, and not have to dick around with cryo gears.

ditto ! and you have the 30 splines for those 60 wider axles ..

But if his goal is super light, then the 200+ lbs lighter of a Cruiser axle might be worth it?

There's a guy in TN who is using a FJ40 front on the rear of his buggy, and supposedly hasn't had much trouble out of it... But, it's only heresay, I haven't seen it, or seen how he drives it. (But why would you build a buggy just to pamper it?)

Front axle sees a lot less stress than the rear.

A hybrid Ferd9"/with 60 outers would be your best bet..

35 (or 40 spline inners) with a decent set of knuckles..

Scott at rockstomper had a set of AL 60 knuckles on the rear of his buggy. Worked awesome..

Guess the dream is fading with the shortcomings of a front cruiser axle.

Might build it for fun and see what fails first, guessing either the ball or the knuckle housing.

There is a local here with his FJ40 with 33s who has been playing with a cruiser front axle in the rear.

Not a good comparo as big tires and big power put through a reduction box would be the final testiment to the strength or lack of.

The knuckles will rip off..

I bet these would take care of that issue

Yep those would work, gonna open up the tappers for a bigger stud and cone washer.

If they do break, then he might upgrade to those knuckles.

First things first, the guy making it wants to build an entire housing.

Bet not - it'll help, but you still have the same little knuckle bearings.. Those bearings are 70% of the reason I switched to something else.. the lockouts being most of the other reason.. (6 stud hub this, heat-treat that, cromo-this...fawk that!)

My god you could spend a ton of coin on a toyota rear steer axle that is weaker in the end than a D60 with $300 worth of shafts..

I have heard this same statement over and over, I agree with the fact it will fail much sooner than a cheaper built d60.

But its not me building it and I am curious to see how long it will hold up under a 4000 pound mini truck that the guy is building.

Should be entertaining, as long as he is not broke in the middle of the trail.

If you compared the Toy knucle bearings with D60 " bearings " are wht 25% more tough !?

Ding ding ding :D

Try it and see.

D60 stuff is significantly stronger than Toy stuff. One of the main reasons is pure leverage. The spacing between the toy stuff is too small. By moving the ball joints or kingpins out further from the center line of the axle you actually reduce stress on the knuckles. Think of a cheater bar on a nut. The longer it is, the more leverage you get on the nut.

The six bolt knuckle design does address the additional stress put on the studs themselves from hysteer, but it does not address the issue of the strength of the knuckle itself.

hummmm

i like it, but wierd stuff is entertaining :)

knuckles tearing off ?? i guess i see little more stress in climbs, but overall
should carry less weight in all other aspects then if it were in the front.

housing double trussed, with knuckle SUPPORTS, 30 spline throughout, me i just run a cruiser axle and cruiser third and be happy. fj60 width :)

i dont play with 80 stuff, question is WHY ? other then ubber $$$ thirds.

strongest factory toyota inner knuckles ???

never had any housing issues, (MINI) specific to knuckles/hysteer stuff in a near 6000lb rig loaded and made a number of hard backwards runs up ledges, etc...

I know that bad things happen, never and issue yet. worst case PREPARE.

to bad no fj60 housing, I would build it on the bench just cause :)

d60 stuff is stronger just cause its bigger in every aspect.

however STILL very little leverage based on CL of kingpin to knuckle studs, marginally wider then the same toyota measurement. HOWEVER knuckles
are stronger in that area.

6 bolt knuckles are not cast with better materials ??? or thicker as well ? what was the point of building them ? stud count, stud materials, etc... DO nothing when the top of the knuckle pops off. i have paid no attention to 6 bolt talk.

From the Trail Mart Web Site "The knuckle housing is also thicker then stock and larger gussets have been added around the outside of the knuckle for extra strength."

looks like they are a bit thicker than stock.. Obviously time will tell, based on how they are designed it looks like people wont be able to break the knuckle like they are on the stock ones..

Gonna give her a rip.

Gonna tear up a set of factory units first with upgraded studs etc.

Oh man I think Im in love......

Hear that little turbo spool up, soweet.

That thing looks small and damn light with maybe a 22r turbo?

Fuel for the fire... 4-wheels steer Toyota buggy, STOCK birfs till the 30 spliners come in, he drove it like this all day. Didn't break 'em.
