I know, its not gonna work..........

But........................................

What if we built a super light buggy and ran a 80 series high pinion unit with Chromo stuff???

Only one way to find out!

:zilla: DO IT! :grinpimp:

i would think that building it as beef as possible you may just get away with it.. I mean why not? it works in the front.. How much more stress will the rear see?

Won't an 8" low pinion V6 mini third fit into the 80 front housing? That would put you on the drive side of the gears and open up alot more gear ratio options... Just a thought.

this is pretty much my plan for next winter, but i'm gonna graft 80 outers onto something, maybe an 80 rear?
Had a long conversation with bobby long about it, his opinion is that his chromo 80 stuff in the rear would be fine in my 3200lb buggy. He was of the opinion that 80 outers grafted onto a mini truck rear with cryo gears would be plenty strong.

But the cromo FJ80 stuff is NO stronger than the 30 spline minitruck stuff, it's just that the 80 knuckles are a PITA to work with the steering on. The stub fails before anything else, and the stubs are the same size between minitruck/40/60/80.

I'd save myself the trouble and either run a minitruck steer axle, or a FJ40/60 axle if you want the stronger third member, and not have to dick around with cryo gears.

The tie rod is in the way but otherwise the low pinion will fit without mods.

Thanks Eskimo, seen your posts on pirates and appreciate your feedback.

Time will tell, I hope our buggy build will yield such low weight.

The knuckles will rip off..

You can try it and see, but more likely than not, you will be looking at a DANA product in the end..

Could be right, not a lot of meat thier.

I'm with Dave(35xj) on this...I thought about doing the same...grafting the outers onto an FZJ-80 rear...that way I'd still have my e-locker rear and not run on the coast side of the gears. I'd go with the 300M stuff from Bobby

Ya, thinking about using cruiser stuff.

Have to come up with way of making the balls stronger, adding material and maybe cryo.

I think you'll end up spending lots of money on something that will not be nearly as strong as a Dana60 front axle.
