Had a really freak accident happen to my pup, Thatcher friday evening. I wasn't at the house, but Steve and Jason were there wrestling with the crank nut on the ol' 2f in the back yard. As Thatcher always has done, he was dropping the tennis ball at their feet expecting a toss so he could chase it over, and over, and over, and over. .......

Well, Thatch took off after the ball, jumped into the air and experienced a FCE--fibro cartilaginous embolism (sp?). He lost all feeling to his rear... basically paralyzed in the rear. No use of his rear legs or tail. :frown: We initially thought he had fractured his spine.

Steve came up to the volleyball court to get me and told me i needed to get home quick that Thatcher had been hurt. Got there and Jason was already on the phone with his girlfriend who is a Vet!! She was telling him what to look for, had him holding him still in case it was a spinal fracture, ect.. They helped me load him into the 80 and off to the emergency vet. Steve rode with me to hold Thatch still and stayed with me at the vet until almost 11:00 that night.

Jason was home to lend a hand anyway he could. His girlfriend, Loretta, came over once i got him home to check him over and talk with me a bit. She also came over two nights to help show me how to put a cathador in him so he could urinate, and provided me with some at no cost. I have received phone calls and texts from all of them almost daily checking on Thatch.

Thatch is home now and is slowly recovering from this. It will be a long recovery but we hope he will recover fully. From not having any function of his back legs or tail, to now he can wag his tail and stand on his RR leg and has some feeling in his LR leg. He is in the kennel all day and just hates the fact he can't run and chase more tennis balls at this time and wonders why the heck i'm putting him in jail every day.

I am deeply appreciative of all their help and being there in a very emotional and tuff time for me. The emergency vet had me prepped for worst case scenario, so i was pretty tore up about it. It's amazing how much a dog is a part of your family and your emotions. This all really helps prove who your true friends are and for that i will always remember and be there for them anyway i can.

Thanks again!

Steph, Missy and I have been thinking and praying for a speedy recovery for Thatcher. We know just how much our lab is a part of our life and couldn't imagine what we would do if something happened to her. Jason and Steve are awesome people/friends and I'm glad they were there to take control of the situation.

By all means, let us know if there is anything we can do to help out.

Good luck and hang in there.
-Jon

BTW - Missy has that same duck toy... she loves it!!

Glad Thatcher is on the way to recovery. It's amazing how attached you can get to a pet. My wife and I don't have kids, so our lab, Marley, is like our son. He's almost 10 now and is slowing down a good bit. It pains me to think that one day we'll have to say goodbye to him. It's a cruel reality that dogs just don't live long enough. They're here long enough to firmly attach themselves to your heart, and then they're gone.

Again, I'm very glad Thatcher is recovering and that the injury wasn't as bad as initially thought. Hopefully he'll be back to his old self again in no time.

Here's to a speedy recovery! Dogs are truly man's best friend, I can't stand to see them in any kind of agony.

Wow, Jason Steve and Loretta define true friendship. That is simply amazing.

Thatch, get well soon so you can get back out there and enjoy your great dog life!!!!!!!!!

Glad to help Alex. I have to say I have never witnessed anything like this. I watched a perfectly healthy dog go chase and jump for a tennis ball and then come down paralyzed. I was shocked. Thatch was scared to death and trying to run dragging his back legs and yelping frantically, I honestly didnt know what to do but Jason immediately ran over and layed down on top of him to immobilize him. It was freaky to say the least. I am glad he is getting better and I really believe that he will come out of this. Just say the word if I can help in any way.

I can't imagine what I'd do if that happened to my trail buddy(Shock the lab mutt). Dogs are amazing, and I bet he'll make a great recovery. Big props to those that helped, and I hope Thatch gets better quickly.

So glad to hear Thatch is on the mend. Steve called and let us know Friday night what happened and we were stunned. We've kept you guys in our thought and prayers since it happened and we're just glad he is getting better. I can't even imagine what it was like to be there. It's a good thing everyone kept their calm and handled it the way they did. I am sure that helped Thatch out. Get well soon Thatch.

Any updates on Thatch? Been thinking about him a lot and I sure hope he's feeling better. Labs are the toughest dogs man, my ole' blockhead, Corban, fought cancer like a champion. Never even whimpered or complained until literally the last day. They didn't give him 6 months after initial diagnosis and he fought hard and lived a good life well over 18 months. And don't worry about kenneling him, he's smart and knows you are doing it for his own good!

Well, last night he went peeee on his own, so that is another big step in the right direction. He is still dragging his left rear leg/foot, but he does have some feeling in it. If we can get him to turn his paw pad down to walk on, we will have jumped another hurdle. He is healing a lot quicker then i or the docs expected.

thanks again for all the prayers and best wishes. I really do feel that they have helped.
