Had a really freak accident happen to my pup, Thatcher friday evening. I wasn't at the house, but Steve and Jason were there wrestling with the crank nut on the ol' 2f in the back yard. As Thatcher always has done, he was dropping the tennis ball at their feet expecting a toss so he could chase it over, and over, and over, and over. .......
Well, Thatch took off after the ball, jumped into the air and experienced a FCE--fibro cartilaginous embolism (sp?). He lost all feeling to his rear... basically paralyzed in the rear. No use of his rear legs or tail.
We initially thought he had fractured his spine.
Steve came up to the volleyball court to get me and told me i needed to get home quick that Thatcher had been hurt. Got there and Jason was already on the phone with his girlfriend who is a Vet!! She was telling him what to look for, had him holding him still in case it was a spinal fracture, ect.. They helped me load him into the 80 and off to the emergency vet. Steve rode with me to hold Thatch still and stayed with me at the vet until almost 11:00 that night.
Jason was home to lend a hand anyway he could. His girlfriend, Loretta, came over once i got him home to check him over and talk with me a bit. She also came over two nights to help show me how to put a cathador in him so he could urinate, and provided me with some at no cost. I have received phone calls and texts from all of them almost daily checking on Thatch.
Thatch is home now and is slowly recovering from this. It will be a long recovery but we hope he will recover fully. From not having any function of his back legs or tail, to now he can wag his tail and stand on his RR leg and has some feeling in his LR leg. He is in the kennel all day and just hates the fact he can't run and chase more tennis balls at this time and wonders why the heck i'm putting him in jail every day.
I am deeply appreciative of all their help and being there in a very emotional and tuff time for me. The emergency vet had me prepped for worst case scenario, so i was pretty tore up about it. It's amazing how much a dog is a part of your family and your emotions. This all really helps prove who your true friends are and for that i will always remember and be there for them anyway i can.
Thanks again!
