Ok so I have read all the threads about he PS conversion unfortunately they are all 40 related nothign 55 that I have seen. Anyway so my question is do you really need the steering column support thing from TPI for the 55. Also could you just maje a plate to attach to the firewall that does the same thing?

what year is your 55 ? for later models, you don't need a support

Its a 73. I was looking at the support and thinking you could probably just make something similar though, obviously doing it right is important since its my life at stake. I just have a strong dislike for TPI and I hate overpaying for parts.

steering column support?? i dont understand, are you doing tilt steering??

since you cant find my previous ramblings on 60 series power steering in my pig here is a pic for ya.

Its a round plate type thing that goes on the firewall I imagine that its job is to strengthen the area around the column from added stresses caused by the PS? I read it in 2 different threads. Its TPI part # TPS73 I think. I didnt really understand the point of it in anything I read thats why I am asking. I'm assuming from your comments that you didnt do this Rhino?

clemson: what PS conversion are you doing?
the 55 series already has the bearing you are refering to becuase we already have an itermediet shaft with u-jionts on both ends and a support bearing at the firewall ( sor part#098-71 for your pig).
i did have to lengthen my intermediet shaft by cutting it ~1/2in from the u-jiont
and adding a piece of tube.
if you are doing a scout or 60 ps box i would be happy to explain what i did in detail on the phone 607 227 9585
also there was a great write up iether here or on birfield, of a scout install, try searching under "scout power stearing".
good luck, carl

I go to my webpage and read about the Scout Steering conversion.

I'm doing a 60 conversion I have everything sitting here just need to do it. Trying to read as much as I can. I read everything that got linked in my ps thread a while back.

clem you assume right, i did not do any sort of reinforcement at the firewall. seems to me all the stress on the steering is between the box and wheels and stress is way LESS on the shaft and steering wheel, hence much easier steering. unless i'm retarded?

Might be because some of the stuff that I read is 40 related. There just isnt a lot about 55 ps conversions.
