I'm thinking about a PS conversion for my 71 FJ40. Looking for advice on what is the best option that won't break the bank. I'm a decent welder so fabrication doesn't bother me if it saves money/time. This will mainly be a DD with light trail duty, 35's and stock F engine for now - probably a 2F down the road.

A great starting point is to go to the FAQ section of 40's tech forum. Have fun researching.

Jackpot! Thanks

What I'd also be interested in is your opinions on which one is best for a DD and why.

if you can find the stock parts - workinng thru classifieds - I'd sugggest trying to use stock parts. Not sure if you'll be so lucky with a F motorr. FAQs as said above..

I have a Saginaw on the '66 LV. I hate the way the frame was cut and that the PTO winch had to be shifted to accommodate it but I really do like having PS. I believe I read that a 60 series PS option would work for my '77 40, but I never did any serious research into it. If you do the job yourself, you should write your own thread here so we can follow your progress.

The saginaw conversion does make winch mounting harder.

If doing mine again I would consider PS off of a 60.

Send a pm to Johnny @GLTHFJ60 . He did an all Toyota PS conversion on mine years ago using an FJ60 box and FJ40 and FJ55 parts. Works great.

Personally i will prefer to have this 60 conversation than the aftermarket one that i have.

Just don't even look at the JT Outfitters kit. not complete and doesn't fit well

Agreed, I used the kit once. Very poor fit, I made replacement parts from what they supplied and it worked out, but a PIA

The fj60 ps conversion was real easy. You have to relocate the upper shock mounts, but nothing else. Would definitely do that again.

I did it on one F engine and 6 2F engines now, and i will not lie. It is so much easier on a 2F. Have to find a 2 belt crank pulley and a 2 belt water pump pulley. This set up is on my F engine here at the house. Feel free to come by and look. Should have it at the next workday also.

HiJack for a moment.
I am still pulling parts from the 62 and was wondering how much different it is (power steering) compared to my '82 40? Mine did not come with powersteering and this thread got me thinking about it.
Are parts still available to rebuild if needed?

I've got all the parts for the minitruck swap, which if I remember correctly is similar to the 60 conversion. It's on my to do list, but I do need to get the PS box brackets that a few Mud members sell.

I've also had no issues with JTO when I get parts from them. I know a few people have in the past, but they were great when I needed all the parts for my brake rebuild.

Yeah, they say stay with 33's if going with the minitruck setup, but I'm now having to go sprung over and not sure how odd that would look. I would only being doing mild trails in my rig, well, that's the intent!

I have been told that the mini truck and 60 series PS kits aren't the greatest at turning the steering when on the rocks with big tires.

If we're talking about the 60 PS box with the factory 60 PS pump, then yes, I'd agree. However, put a Saginaw pump behind that 60 PS box (like I have) and you will have no problems turning 40" tires 95% of the time. When I'm really bound up in the rocks, I can definitely feel the need for a ram assist.

The FZJ80 PS box uses the same bolt pattern as the late FJ60 box, but has a larger power piston. If you took the FZJ80 box, put a UZJ105 sector shaft (and pitman arm) on it then used that for a PS conversion, ported for ram assist of course, that'd be the bees knees. That's my eventual plan.
