Over the next few weeks I will be doing a bit of research on components to use for this project. What I am going to design is a lighting setup that will recognize a sensor on my keys and light up the ground, sides, and turn on the headlights for me. I never light walking up to a vehicle in the pitch black. Living in Atlanta, I have had my truck shot up, broken into, and many other things. When I lived in downtown, it was a regular occurrence that people would wait by my vehicle to ask for money or try to sell me drugs, if I can light the area around the vehicle, they will not stick around. I don't live in downtown Atlanta anymore, however I do travel down there almost every day, with classes in the afternoon the only time I have for work is in the evening. When I leave, the homeless people are begging for money and the dealers are out trying to make sales.

So the plan...make a system that turns on lighting when you approach the vehicle. Safety, convenience, and why not?

What lights will turn on?

The headlights (low beams)
LED Strips running along side the roof rack (~15 foot surrounding coverage)
Marine Flood lights underneath by the doors (very low lighting, nothing absurd)

Distance?

I will have a sensor that is on my keychain, it will be adjustable in terms of how far away I am and when the lights come on. I am thinking (at this time) 10-15 feet. I really don't want to be half way across the parking lot and have my headlights and everything else come on.

How?

I am looking into a proximity sensor that can be adjusted with range and different modes. I want to be able to select different modes, depending on location and situation.

Modes?
1) Headlights, flood lighting, and rear lighting (everything)
2) Flood and rear only
3) No lights at all

This is a rough draft. It's something I have always wanted to do with this truck. I used to valet park at a restaurant in Atlanta, it had no lights in the parking lot and it was very nice walking up to a car, lights came on, and you could get in without tripping over anything or putting your shoe into a deep puddle.

In the end I think a Arduino board programed for different modes would be the easiest way. I really don't like the IR method, as the key has to be pointed at the vehicle, I guess it wouldn't be that bad, but if your hands are full...pain in the ass. I know exactly what needs to be done for the lighting, however I am still struggling with how it will sense when I am walking up to the vehicle. I should be staring on the lighting pretty soon, however for now I may just wire them through a relay and tap into the dome lighting, which turns on when you unlock via key (which mine is broken....)

Thoughts?

I like the idea

Obviously becoming pretty common place now with all the "smart key" options you can get from various manufactures. I don't know much more than the basic premis that the car and fob are spitting out some low frequency signals and when your close enough it unlocks, or lights up in this case. My first thought would be that for the passive system it may be a few more bucks than a simple IR system. The passive system would certainly be more convienient. Like I said though I have no idea on price difference between the passive or active systems. That may be your deciding factor.

I'd be pretty interested in a ready made system. I've wanted some rock lights and I had the idea of wiring them into the truck so that when I unlocked it they would come on. So I'll be watching to see what you come up with.

also besides Atlanta, New Orleans may be a good market for this for the same reasons lol

Add Houston. Downtown is littered with beggars

since you ask ..

I would imagine this setup with a rear 2X2 side pods and front LED bar .. no under doors and no strips .. but that's me ..

Wife new Santa Fé sense " smart " key from 4 - 5 feet away .. open rear door mirrors and light 'em up at same time . as well as the inside lights ..

Seems like 10-15 ft is way to close to me; if someone was there you'd nearly be on top of them when the lights cut on.

I agree a little more distance would be great. Also, two other suggestions, how about the interior lights coming on as well and have the back up lights come on, that way you have light all around the truck. I would be very interested in something like that. Why not do have these turn on when you un lock the truck via the FOB. Also, how about the side lights underneath the side view mirrors, some small LEDs like puddle lamps? I've been thinking about this for some time now. Thanks. Cheers.

2000UZJ, any updates on this thread? It's been a few days...I'm interested in proximity lighting for our truck. Thanks.

None so far, I've been really busy and haven't had any time for this. I'll keep you posted if I make any progress. Looking slim until mid-June.

No problem, I can wait. I would like to explore some lighting ideas, when you are nearing completion of this project. Thanks. Cheers.

Ideally, I'd like the factory key FOB to operate the proximity lighting. Once again, what would make sense to me is, when one unlocks the car, the interior domes light up, back up lights, puddle lamps or equivalent and either the cornering and/or parking lights or headlights. That would be fantastic and provide true proximity lighting.

Any updates 2000UZJ?

Still working on it. I'm playing around with a few different options. It's proving tough to get everything working properly. I am tuning tests on small units. I have a LED 2X2 hooked up to a Arduino board and writing code to the system. Lots of trial and error. I know there are simpler ways to do it, I want hands free, jaw dropping, cool factor 10 for this setup.

Ok, let me know. My personal preference is that it be key FOB operated, otherwise could see it go off when someone else walks past it, or at least one with an option. Thanks. Cheers!

I swear I have seen alarm systems that work with a smart phone from anywhere.

Wondering what you guys are using for lighting. I am installing a Prestige keyless entry system in my truck, and it has an aux output that I can trigger from the fob. Normally used for stuff like rolling windows up/down, I was thinking about installing some sort of rock lights that I could trigger remotely. Looking for something that is very weatherproof (obviously) and a broad pattern that will light up all under the truck. Everything I see that is LED has a beam to it.
