Projects for this weekend, but I need a little help...

I'll be doing the work on Sunday, but I doubt that it will take me 5 minutes... I'm not quite the wrenching expert that the rest of the people on this forum are (a problem I am eagerly working toward changing, however). Anyway, the weekends are the only time for now that I can do anything with the cruiser. As soon as I can get it running well enough to drive then I can bring it down to work with me and work on it during the week as well. I'm going to place the order for the tubing from Mcmaster-Carr on Monday morning, so that'll be my project for the next weekend and maybe I'll be ready to celebrate after that.

Ok, well I haven't actually seen the part yet, so maybe I can get it done quickly. I was under the impression that I was going to be replacing the whole assembly, not just the plug.

Well, I was asking if the ground to the fender was acceptable in place of grounding it to the engine block since so many people seem to be saying that theirs is that way. It is a solid connection however. I will post pictures of the setup in the morning. Anyway, today I replaced the fusible link and you were right about how easy it was, but maybe even 1/4 banana was an overstatement. I was under the impression originally that I would be replacing not just the plug but all of the oddball wires that connect to it as well, so that's why I thought it would be so much more difficult. I also replaced the positive battery cable but these things did not solve my problem. I am going to trace the wires from the fuel cutoff solenoid and the carb fan tomorrow so that they can be ruled out as well.

On Wednesday, I took my battery to Kragen and they supposedly slow charged and tested it and came back the next day saying it was fine. But I'm really starting to wonder if these guys are on the level with me. Maybe they just don't want to have to do a warranty replacement and are just trying to get rid of me... I don't know. I think I will take it to Napa on Tuesday and see what they have to say about it.

So the big question is... If the solenoid and the fan are properly grounded, the battery cables are installed tightly and correctly, the fuses are fine, and the fusible link is fine, and if the battery is fine, what then could be causing my problem?

You need to run the ground to the engine and the body. Just doing one or the other will not provide a stable (constant ground). Toyotas are notorius for funky grounds. so if you follow the more is better rule you will be fine.

In inspecting it, I realized that it does in fact go to the engine block. There is a cable coming off the negative terminal that connects to the side of the engine bay and then a cable from there that goes to the block. I can't believe that I didn't notice it before. I've done the best inspection I could and I can't see any problems with the wiring for the fan or the solenoid. It could still be one of those things but I can't see anything obvious.

Anyway, with the new battery wires and the fusible link are not doing the trick, I have reached the limit of the work my wife will allow me to perform on the truck. I am on the edge of getting divorced as it is and you should have heard the insane fight we had today after I spent a mere 20 minutes working on it. Well, if you're in Southern California, maybe you did...

I drove it around the block and ran it for a while (it ran really strong), but once I turned it off it was dead again. Where I'm at right now is that it has to go. As much as I love it and as much as it could solve many problems to have it as a daily driver again I can't keep it and stay married. At this point, I'm not sure there's anything I can do to save what I have, but I have to try and that truck is one of the flames pointed at the gas tank that is my marriage at the moment.

Would any of you like to add a new 60 to your collection for practically nothing? I'll throw in the stereo system I removed previously and a commercial grade rack if the price is right. We're not talking about big bucks here. Like $750 - $1000, but hey, I'm negotiable. I've talked briefly about selling it previously but at that point I decided to keep it. I can't do it now, so it's yours. Search with the phrase "A question of value..." until I can find the link and edit this to reflect that to see what it has and so on. PM me if you're interested or if you'd like to ask me questions.

Thank you all for everything.

Ian
