Loading up for the powdercoaters. Axles will be torn down today and housings blasted and painted.

what are you planning for axle paint if you dont mind me asking?

i am rebuilding the rear axle on my 4runner and am going to be in that boat soon.
 
I know you have some experience with the Rover frames, I've done a couple and have never had good luck having an old frame galvanized unless the inside was sandblasted spotless. The acid dip doesn't do a lot for removing the factory paint on the inside of the frame and it's tough to clean up totally with sandblasting. I think you would have the same issue with the 80 frame where it is boxed. Just my 2 cents, keep up the good work, it looks great.
 
I plan on using POR15 paint thinned and shot through an automotive paint gun. Its pretty tough and easily touched up.

Galvanizing is out as of now. There is no one within 400 miles that can acid dip the frame and the galvanizer will not do it without this. I will hot wax the inside and hope for good coverage.
 
Gary i used a gun from eastwood that came with a wand to shoot the inside of the frame. And topcoated the por with 2k epoxy to keep it from chalking. And easily touched up and uv stable.

Are you going to put anything over the POR? Like chassis black?
 
The POR15 thinned shoots semi gloss and there is really no reason to top coat it. They are axles and will see some abuse, so a single stage paint is idea for touchup.

Erik, I am using that gun to spray wax up into the frame hoping to slow any potential rust where I seamed it.

I'm going to be shortening my 80 as well - I'll PM you to pick your brain, if you don't mind :)

Glad you're using the stock fuel tank...was thinking I may have to copy your idea for my FJ84 build - didn't want to have to run a fuel-cell type tank in the stretched 40 tub.

Can't wait to see more photos of your progress.

Perhaps you can use the time to reconsider your plans and make it later on even more impressive :)......to keep yourself (and us) excited.

Will this be a re-paint, or is the 62 body good-to-go? If a re- paint, OE white or color change?
 
I looked for a long time for a pristine body in white. This truck has had only a small dent repair on the rear quarter with all other panels being original paint. Its pretty nice, needing a good detail, but not much else. I should have the frame back Monday or Tuesday and bolts back from the refinishers the same time, so its coming together.
 
Ok so I finally got the axles and frame back from the blaster/coaters. These guys really do a nice job, even covers some of my crappy welding. I talked Christo out of an OME suspension system, unboxed my refreshened Cad plated bolts and started to assemble. This is definitely more fun than the dirty stuff. Tomorrow I am going to get the engine combo cleaned up and bolted in and hopefully start some wiring.
