Very nice HZJ73! At this point in your brake service, you have the option of switching over to Tacoma/4R or Tundra rotors and calipers. Benefits include, easier to service, obtain parts and also increases your track width so you can remove those wheel spacers up front.

Your truck seems SUPER clean!

Also, I feel bad for your garage working conditions....must suck to work like that in the garage (hehehe). What kind of lift is that on the last photo?

Keep up the good work, the trunion bearings needed some love for sure!

-Alberto

The struggles we deal with... lol! I've even got my wife saying the garage sucks and we need a bigger garage. :)

The lift is a BendPak P-6. It's a drive over 6000 lbs weight rating hydraulic lift. It will raise the vehicle about 36" or so. I use it mainly for my low slung car, but it works with the 73 as well. It was one of my best (and cheapest) craigslist finds ever.

I did my rear pads, calipers, and rotors recently. If you go with the parts for your model they will be very expensive. There is a work around however that US model toyota has essentially the identical part with a slight variation giving it a different part number. This will speed up the process and save mountains of cash. The clever guys at Radd Cruisers discovered this and for this reason I don't feel comfortable giving their trade secrets away without their knowing so give them a call and they will certainly help you out.

Coming along nicely. How's your e-brake? I think mines pooched and there's no cheap way around it. These 70 series with the disk rear can call for some specialty parts

Thanks for the info on the brakes. I will call Radd tomorrow and see what they have to say. The e-brake was in perfect condition. Looked like it had been replaced/rebuilt in the last few years. I think the e-brake is almost identical the one in my FJ Cruiser. I might even take one of the FJC rear rotors off and see if it will fit the 73. I'm betting it will be really close. Even all the component look the same.

This is the rear on my FJC... I wish I would of take a picture of the 73's to compare.

Tacoma and 4Runner Brake Mounting Kit

I run Brian's brake mounting kit on my FJ Cruiser and it's a great setup. Probably more work than I want to get into at this point. The 73's brakes work great... I have no issues with the stopping power of the stock brakes. Now, if I can't find a reasonable source for rotors I may revisit the FROR kit. I actually have some mini truck spindles, hubs, rotors and one of the very rare Diamond Axle wide kits sitting in a box... that could be an option too.

More goodies showed up today. Thanks to John @Radd Cruisers for the electric to manual hub spacers. Looks like the 73 might be driveable next weekend. I'll try to photo document the install.

I spent a little time searching for rear brake rotors information. Specifically tried to find the specs for the rear rotors for the HZJ73. I think the FJ Cruiser stuff has a good chance of fitting. Here is what I was able to glean from a few different sites for just the rotors. Hopefully the websites I hit had the correct specs posted...

HZJ73 rear rotor specs

Type Vented
Diameter 312 mm
Height 68 mm
Thickness 18 mm
Center Hole 106 mm

FJ Cruiser rear rotor specs (2007 model year)

Type Vented
Diameter 12.285" (312mm)
Height 2.68" (68mm)
Thickness .71” (18mm)
Center hole 4.17” (106mm)

This coming weekend I will pull a rear rotor off my FJ Cruiser and compare it to a rotor on the HZJ73. I will also take a look at the calipers, brake pads and e-brake shoes to see if they are the same as well. I certainly hope some of the part are cross compatible. Would make finding parts much easier (and cheaper). :)

For the rear rotor I find a part # of 42431-60090 (sorry @beno if I stepped on your toes). I think 42431-60180 will also work. The 60180 # is available in North America but maybe not the USA. HTH.

Thank you... helpful. I did find the 60090 in the EPC as the original part. I also found 60180 as a cross referenced part # but as you mentioned can't locate it in the US. It also looks like 42431-60171 is a cross referenced part to 60180 but the specs I see online show this as a much larger rotor than it on the truck today. 60171 is 335mm where the stock rotor is 312mm.

Sorry, no intent to offend.
Would you mind sharing your source where obtain the specs on the parts?
Thanks

LOL... I appreciate all the help I can get with this truck. :) I found a lot of information via ToyoDIY.com, then looked up the parts on InfoPart.org: Car Parts and https://www.onlineautoparts.com.au. Also looked up a bunch of parts on www.rockauto.com as they sometimes offer specs for the aftermarket parts. Now I do take all the information online with a grain of salt given I cannot verify the accuracy of the data. :)

I got a chance to check the FJ Cruiser brakes on the HZJ73 today. Short answer... in my opinion the FJ Cruiser rotors, brake pads and calipers will work on my 73. The rotors are the same size and the brake pads are also the same size. The calipers on the HZJ73 are mounted on the front of the rotor, whereas the FJ Cruiser are mounted on the rear of the rotor. In order to make the calipers work you will need to swap them side to side in order to keep the bleed holes at the top of the calipers. I believe the FJ Cruiser calipers will work as well, but I need to do a little more research caliper part numbers.

The parking brake is a crap shoot right now as I would need to take the hub off the FJC and remove the shoes in order to compare the setup. The braking material on the FJC shoes is about 3-4mm narrower than the HZJ73. The material length is also similar (see pics). My e-brake on the 73 is fine, so not plans to change it now, but when it needs replacing I will first try the FJC setup as I think there is a good chance it will work.

I am going to order a set of FJ Cruiser rotors (part # 42431-60201) and I will run them on my HZJ73. I'll report back any issues that I run into, but I do not expect any. Talking with Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters he noticed that the FJ Cruiser part number was reverse superseded by the current part number 60180. I'm posting this information in case anyone else might find it helpful, but please do your homework and make sure you order the right parts for your truck as this is my experiment. :)

As few pics (ok a lot of pics) to help...

Here is the 73 brake setup. Note the locations of the caliper is on the front of the rotor.

If you still have them off it might be nice to check the piston diameter on the calipers, that would have been a possible change which could effect how the calipers would perform.

There is no reverse supersession on the 43512-60180. That has always been the FJC part number for the front rotors.

42431-60201 is a supersession of 42431-60200 for the rear rotors.

Nice work here. Real nice.

Great idea... I'll pull them back off the FJC this weekend and measure the piston.

Finished the rear brake install this morning. The FJ Cruiser parts fit perfect. Below are the part numbers that I used.

42431-30201 (rear FJ Cruiser rotors)
04466-60090 (rear FJ Cruiser brake pad set)

Here are a few pictures... everything fit just fine. No drag in the rear hub at all.

I also took a measurement on the piston... need to pull the FJC caliper again and measure it. Will post back once I do.

I hate to say it, but we've been on top of this stuff for over 10 years... and I have most of the answers for your braking needs.

Funny that our Southern neighbors are having to do so much leg work to solve problems we nailed a long time ago.

Nice to see the wheel being invented for a second time, and round is still the preferred shape ;-)

Didn't get a chance to measure the FJC caliper piston, but will eventually. Front rotors and pads arrived. Will plan on finishing the front hubs next weekend. Waiting on the steering joints in order to be a driver again.

The Safari Turbo showed up today... it will be a few weeks before I have time to start turbo the install. I need to finish the items on my maintenance list first before I start tinkering with the turbo kit. Still need to make a decision on the egt, boost and temp gauges as well.
