Im leaning toward bronze valve covers and intake manifold with black accents and black throttle body. Or the same scheme but with silver hammerite.

toojayzee, you are my new wrenching/project idol...and now I really want a wife who would deal with never-ending desire to tinker and have horsepower. And I always wanted but now even more want a big garage to wrench in that I don't share with anyone.

And...I'm going to find myself a FZJ80 in then next few years to turn into something cool like this...(or put a lengthened FJ40 on top of it! Dream in one hand and s*** in the other...

This type of swap seems to be getting more and more attention. I was looking into superchargers, then turbos....but the next logical step is the v8, and heck....not far off in the cash department. Ton of time, but thanks to you and few others, this will be easier for folks to follow. I know Slee is working on a "kit" of sorts, at least for motor mounts and stuff. Looks like the harness will be the real challenge of your project though.
Nice work!

When a few other folks asked about a "kit" - thats what I see as being a kit. The motor mounts and x-member. The shifter for the tcase and trans will be dependant upon what engine/trans/tcase are used. That is if I were to offer something.
There are just so many variables with a swap of this nature. If everyone that wanted to do it was able to procure the same engine/trans/t-case it would be one thing...but the wiring is different enough from year to year in the body let alone what toyota does with the motors and ecu's that IMO it would become more of a hassle trying to offer a harness than its worth.

IMO the harness is the easy part. I actually feel wierd because I dont normally ask for help on these types of projects but I needed some input for this one, and Rob aka superrunner stepped up and was able to help me with a few important items so far.

Next project....

Twin turbo 4.0 V8. Might re-sleeve it to make it a 4.7. The 1UZ aluminum block motors can handle quite a bit of abuse, more so than the 2UZ iron block.

Thankfully I have a wife that understands for the most part. And as long as she gets to play with the toys when they are done that makes her feel like it was worth it.

Its when I have a cool/fast/fun toy that I drive, while she is driving a bucket that it becomes a problem.
I was carpooling with a guy for two years and had no desire to work on our one car that ran. It was half ripped apart with no stereo. When the time came for me to drive that car and get her a new car. Guess what happened...I put a stereo in it the first week I drove it. Boy was she pissed.

We have three other project cars that are on hold right now because we both really wanted another 80 :steer:

Maybe one of these days when I have some free time, I will do a writeup on the the wiring. Haven't done one of those since my 7M 4runner back in '01.

Im keeping score on my wiring thus far.
A bummer about something I just realized an hour ago looking at the photos I took last night.
There is a speed sensor that controls converter lockup, in the trans case housing right behind the bell. The 343 has the boss but no hole. Im going to have to open up the damn trans again to drill the hole, and then hope to hell that the shaft or clutch drum has the proper pattern on it for the hall effect sensor to get a reading ;-{

I still think it might work without that. I think it has to do more for smoothing out the process. I remember reading something about it in a lexus manual. But not 100% sure.

Also, not used for lockup, but for O/D.

"This sensor detects the rotation speed of the O/D input shaft
from the rotation of the O/D direct clutch drum.
Its construction is the same as that of the No. 2 vehicle speed
sensor. By comparing the O/D direct clutch speed signal and the No.
2 vehicle speed sensor signal, the ECM detects the shift tim-
ing of the gears and appropriately controls the engine torque
and hydraulic pressure in response to various conditions,
thus performing smooth gear shift.

I was just about to post that same clip. So if I read that correct, it is definatly needed.
Im going to attempt to pick up a 37/64th's drill bit on the way home.

I wish I could say I took the case apart cleaned it and laid it on a 3way axis milling machine and had it precision bored. But alas I cannot. I straight drilled the mutha fawka with my dewalt and a steady hand.

The sensor ring is not in the A343F transmission since it was not intended to have the sensor installed.

I did however pull the oil pump off the 340. Remove the (7) 12mm bolts

and to make the pump easier to remove, the factory tapped two opposing holes in the housing that allow you to put 14mm bolts in and it pulls the whole housing out by hand

The planetary gearset came out in my hand with no tools. It has the ring on it as seen in this photo

On the right side you can see the hole where the sensor reads the ring

This is the 340 ^ donor trans. I need to dismantle the 343 and see if the parts swap over.

:wrench:

I hope you know how to put those clutch packs back together....they are a pita. If you have done it before ignore this, but if not, a few tips.

Put the clutches on the drum before you put it back in the trans. Don't try to fit the drum in the case with the clutches in...won't be fun.

Also be careful with the O/D unit, don't let the center hub fall out because all the clutches will be out of line. You then would have to pull the O/D unit apart and re-assemble.

As for the sensor, are you use it just doesn't use those outer tabs as the triggers? Guess you will see when you pull the other trans apart.

Ive rebuilt manual transmissions before. But never so much as looked inside an automatic transmission before, let alone taken one apart.

I was able to slide the planetary housing back into the clutches with little effort.
Am I overlooking something major ? I thought that as long as the clutch splines lined up and the planetary housing slid back in I would be all set.

Drop some knowledge. It'll be here for everyone to feast on

The ring at the bottom of the pic, closest to my hand is the reluctor ring the sensor needs. Best I can see the 343 doesnt have it. Hopefully i'll have time tomorrow night to open it up.

just make sure you get it past all 4 clutches plates. I have NEVER been able to slide it back in without taking the pack out. And then just be extra carefull with the O/D pack and you won't have to line it back up.

There are 5 plates in this one and i think im making it passed all 5 ?
What needs to occur to get the plates out ? special tools ?

BTW: saw ur 80 on fleebay. G/L with the sale.

just a screwdriver to pop out the retainer ring. I then usually put them on the hub, then line up the notches for the casing and slide it in, then put the retainer ring back in.

If you don't get it back all the way, you will ruin your trans. You might think you got it past all 5, but what if you didn't....

If its that easy, its not even close to worth risking it.
I thought it would require some crazy special tools.

Im hoping to check interchange this evening and i'll post pictures for you guys tonight. stay tuned
