Is this job worth doing as preventative maintenance, or will I have enough warning ahead of time to order a starter and plan to do the job at a convenient time? I've got an '01 LX470 with 210K that's new to me so I don't know whether the starters been replaced. Thanks in advance.

I spend more time cleaning top of engine & gasket surfaces, protecting intake ports form sand/dust falling in and then vacuuming every spec out intake ports before assembly. Then most spend doing the service.

Why! It is a compression killer. I red flag and PPI (pre purchase inspection). When history show any service that requires intake manifold. It is a shame to carelessly, damage the million mile engine.

I can't repeat this enough! Clean, best as you can.

the inside of my ports are black and dirty, i was thinking about placing my vacuum in there and wiping the gunk off the inside. Do you do this as well? good or bad idea?

also i was able to get the driver side bolt off using 3/8 ratchet with a 14 regular socket approached from the passenger side. wheels off and front lowered a bit.

I vacuum out any dust/sand, that has dropped in ports.
No I do not clean out gunk, by hand. Some do!.

I use fuel additive chemicals, in fuel tank to clean gunk while I drive..
44K. Sea foam, Chevron Techron, CATiCLEAN cleans the ports. ;) VVVV

When I did the starter on my 2007, I used a bunch of giant q tips to clean out the ports. I sprayed each q tip with some injector cleaner then carefully cleaned out each port by pulling the q tip from the bottom of the port up. Doing it this way ensured very little, if any, carbon fell down into the valves. Once done I used a small pvc hose on the end of my shop vac to vacuum each port. Ports looked brand new afterwards.

Also deep cleaned the intake manifold which was quite nasty. Lots of fuel injector cleaner, a giant pipe cleaner and flushed it all with the garden hose (and let it dry properly obviously).

The throttle response is noticeably better having done it. I'd say clean it up best you can but it won't hurt anything if you don't.
