At 160,000 miles, the CV boot were cracked and no grease left. I had the L and R replaced by mechanic who does very good work.

Drove around town for about a week with no problems but the first time I took it out on the highway it felt like a I had a flat. The vibration in the front end started around 55 mph and got worse as the speed increased. If I was coasting down hill at that same speed, there was no vibration...

I took it back and my mechanic said something was not right with the axles since the front end wobbled all over the place when he had it on a lift. Obviously not much quality control from the manufacturer.

At his own cost, he replaced both axles. One side is perfect but the other still vibrates, so he's in discussions with the supplier/manufacturer. In fact, the one that still vibrates is starting to leak after about 3000 miles.

To make a long story short, the price tag for the parts was about 50% less compared to Toyota parts but the quality lacking.

Who is the manufacturer? I'd hate to make the same mistake in the future.

Oooo, it doesn't sound like he supplied you with Toyota OEM CV joints. If true, I'd pay him the difference in parts cost and ask him to install them. Toyota-only for CV joints!

Please ask the mechanic what MAKE the CV shafts were. I had looked at GSP shafts, but they stopped importing the LC100 shafts into OZ due to failures. IIRC they also supplied other reputable makes like SPICER, who rebadged them, and also no longer have them. There are plenty available on ebay, but I have queried them and they all have TRIPOD plunge joints, not the six ball type like OEM.

Beno...Does Toyota have remanufactured axles available for the 100s like the Tacomas?

Has anyone used Raxles for LC/LX? I checked with them and they have them available for 300/side. OEM part is 375/side. I've only heard good things about Raxles.

I've seen too many horror stories about the ~$75 cheap axles (from autozone, advance auto, wherever) - I know some people have them and are ok with them, but too many examples of people saying they had to get them replaced due to poor quality (vibration, etc).

I'd run a cheap one on a part time truck, but not a full time ride like a 100 series. Though I've heard of cheap ones grenading almost instantly upon install... then again I know that gal's father and he's got a bit of a lead foot sometimes offroad :).

are Raxles really warrantied forever? Raxles' Lifetime Warranty | Raxles.com

cv axles

Well as one of their larger distributors, I would hope to get an answer as well, but I've been waiting....

I think that as the 100 series becomes more and more popular as an overlander, and as the overall price of the 100 series drops, I think more and more people will start building up 100 series rigs so they can be used in places like Moab, GSMTR, and the Rubicon.

I know that my next rig will be a 100 series and I look forward to aftermarket support with beefed up components that are similar in quality to what we get for the 80 series.

The beefed up CV's are just coming out IIRC. We supplied them with some parts for R & D.

Yes indeedy. My RCV CV shaft assemblies were shipped today. More info regarding install and on-going testing to follow.

ok getting mine too

Ok, so I've got some coming too. I'll stock them as well. We contract RCV to manufacture quite a few parts for us, I've been working with them to put some real input in that these vehicles are fulltime 4wd, and longevity is important. So far on the 80 series HD birfs we're offering are working quite well.

I can go with OEM for 500 bucks, or aftermarket for 150 (forgot the name of the maker) and run that for a few months. I will reboot the OEM one and slap that one back in. Is there a reason to buy a 500 OEM joint just to run for a few months and give me some time to reboot and do some front end work?

Thanks.

($150 sounds ALOT better than 500)

i hear you on that. i installed my own version of limb risers today. will post once i get some pics. thanks for the inspiration

We also stock $150 aftermarket ones if cost is more of an issue than strength. This would be fine, especially for the short term. But why not just do it once?

I will be rebooting my OEM one down the road when I have time, I don't have the funds right now to shell out 500 bucks. So I am thinking of putting the aftermarket one in for now, then swapping them out once I get the OEM one rebooted. therefor I don't have a $500 cv boot sitting in my basement and I have a trail spare if/when I need it to get home.

I have used Raxles for my other vehicle (Volvo 850). Marty is great to deal with, provides exceptional service and I have not heard a single complaint about the company or the products they sell.
