Just heard that @2manycruisers daughter's Prius' cats got stolen so maybe it's time to build some cat protection for all of you Prius owners?

That is the second time I've heard of a Prius having it's cats taken. There was another in my neighborhood. I want to know how they are getting under them. Are they jacking up the car?
A neighbor had an attempt made on his cats. It was a Ford van. They tried to take them at three in the afternoon. Neighbor caught them and chased them off.

They must be using harbor freight alum floor jacks but that cutting noise should be a detriment, I'd think.
Isabelle will be welding up a set of sliders for her 4runner and we'll make sure to protect her cats. Thankfully, the v8 has the cats right at the exh manifolds so they're hard to access. But wait, there's a 3rd cat that's easy to access after the downpipe. I need to do something about that

That is what got my neighbor's attention. He heard a truck idling in front of his house and thought it was the mail (box is across the street from his house). After awhile he heard the sawsall and came out to investigate.

That really sucks. If we could cut parts off of thieves there wouldn't be so many. Hammurabi style.
My sister's house was broken into a few weeks ago and the sh!tstains destroyed what they couldn't fit into the little Ford Ranger they also stole. The truck was found last week at some dump apartment on Central totally trashed with needles inside and the cats cut off. People like that don't deserve to breathe.

They need to perma-ban junkyards from purchasing cats.

There is already a ban on stealing them, we all know how that works.
There needs to be consequences for thievery.
Anymore the scum of the earth are treated like victims. Drug abuse and alcoholism is called a disease and stealing is ok because us that have should feel bad for those that don't. Frappin' clown world.
I know U-Pull won't sell cats. I seem to recall they cut them out before the car hits the lot.

And they won't buy a vehicle that is supposed to have them but doesn't.
These places aren't supposed to be buying them, but they must be. If they couldn't be sold they wouldn't be worth stealing.
We can make all the rules and laws we want, but without consequences for breaking those laws they mean nothing to the scum.
Jails are a joke. 3 hot meals and a warm bed and spend the day playing checkers and spades. Also almost easier to get drugs in jail than it is on the street.

My niece's Prius had the cats stolen back in Ohio about 6 months ago. Insurance paid the claim and my brother bought a steel cover plate to prevent it from happening again.
I read a story about a thief in California getting killed when the Prius he was under fell off the jack. I think prevention starts at the recyclers. They need to make damn sure they arent buying stolen cats. And if they are they need to be shut down and prosecuted.
How about the same rules pawn shops follow? Make them log id.

Ryan's was stolen middle of the day. Someone saw the car jacked up and called the cops. There is a company making skid plates to protect them from theft. Apparently Prii have a higher concentration of precious metals than others. And if you live in CA or NY, only the OEM cats are CARB approved, so it's thousand of dollars and people are just sending the older ones to scrap yards because of the cost. Maybe if I put a sticker that the OEM cats were stolen and replaced with Chinese junk then no one will steal it again.
When I went to the muffler shop last week they showed me a stack of insurance claims to replace Prius cats. They do a few every day.
And apparently it's not just a problem in the US, I saw plenty of posts from the UK with the same problem.
