So what is a fair price. Southern car dealer maintained, 60 k miles garage kept excellent cond. Dealer wants $20000. Kbb says 21k.. what do you think?

I purchased a 1999 two years ago from a mud member, 78K miles, great shape, paid $16k. I thought that was a fair price. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you have not included photos, but I think $20k for the one you are looking at is a little high unless it looks absolutely showroom new and somebody has been doing extensive and thorough maintenance. You can point out to the dealer that this cruiser is a 14-15 year old vehicle, and regardless of routine maintenance, everything rubber is deteriorating- replacing suspension and control arm bushings, hoses, seals, belts (timing belt) will need to be done and will be expensive. You may also point out that the 2 pinion front differential is a known weak point in the 99 and was replaced in the next year with a 4 pinion diff to fix the problem (many on mud add the arb front locker to provide strength to the front diff).

That said, I am extremely happy with my 99, the 2UZ V8 is a thing of beauty, and the only thing that could have made the truck better would be having the 5 speed out of the later years models. If you have not looked at the site yet, Slee Offroad has posted the differences in 100's through the years, very helpful in helping determine what year cruiser will make you the happiest. HTH

That's not what I'd buy if I was spending $20k.

I think an '06 with that low of mileage will run you mid to high 20s. Here's a nice '06 with 140k for $19.5: http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=17368&endYear=2007&modelCode1=LC&sortBy=bestmatchb&showcaseOwnerId=579471&startYear=2006&makeCode1=TOYOTA&searchRadius=300&showcaseListingId=357173068&mmt=[TOYOTA[LC[]][]]&listingId=357491564&Log=0

For under 20k you should be able to find a really nice, low mileage '03-05 which will be at least 4 years newer and have the 5 speed tranny.

Is there a reason you really want a 99LX? I think a fair price for the one you're looking at might be in the $16-18k range, but I think that sort of budget would be better spent elsewhere. Just my $.02 though!

I agree 20K is a bit much. Definitely negotiate down...and have them throw in timing belt+water pump and new tires

For reference, you can get an 03-04 with about 80k on it for $21-22k, so that's a pretty horrible deal. I'd say $14-15k would be reasonable.

Ssg- IF you do go for it (I love my '99) make certain that you have all of the keys. I didn't. You should get two masters and two valet keys. How to tell the diff? The master turns off the security red light as soon as it's inserted, the valet takes 5 seconds to turn it off. New masters are pricey in the $200 range.
Also is the brake fluid clean? And by that I mean really clean? Look at the reservoir, it should be clear. If not it needs to be thoroughly cleaned to the point to where you can see through it with no problems. Mine wasn't even though I'd flushed it twice and so the booster failed (I think from crud released by the flushing?) in the middle of a 2,000 mile trip which resulted in a $3600 bill from the local dealer, after a 60-mile tow.
These trucks are terrific and great drivers but significantly more complex than an 80. My 80 is approaching 300,000 miles and after owning it 11 years it has NEVER let me down. It is meticulously maintained.
 Ned

your right, i actually meant to say 03-05, your right the 06-07's are definitely priced out of the low 20k range. my mistake. this being said, i would personally buy a newer one over an older one with super low millage.. thats just me though and i do very little driving. if i were buying this to put on a heap load of miles i would consider a lower millage one.

Thanks for everyones help and suggestions. I have owned both a 1996 and a 2003 80 and 100 series Land Cruisers and loved them both for different reasons. I know the front end difference between 99 and 2000 as well as the trans differences. Was looking for the newer lc but this one just popped up. Car fax is clean and was purchased and serviced at the lexus dealer. Extremely clean so that is where I am at. I think Ill check it out good and throw down 16 0r 17k Cash and see what they do. Not going to be a lot of off road so the front end differences is not that big to me. Any way to upgrade that front end short of a swap? Thanks again for the help

What do you mean 'upgrade the front end'? There isn't much positive correlation between 4-pinion and longer longevity. If you're going to be that hard on it, your probably need an ARB carrier. The bigger issue, IMO, is the lack of electronics in an un-modified, un-locked 99. Kind of the worst of both worlds. ATRAC is a pretty good system for mild wheeling if you're not ready to go with lockers.

I'm of the opinion that a machine should be run to keep it in working order. Therefore I'd want to know if it sat for 2-3 years intermittently at a vacation property, or if it was just frequent low mileage use, and bid accordingly lower.

Well the point is moot since the lx just got sold. Kind of glad as I do prefer the 5 speed trans and upgraded front end. Just lazy and want to find a nice truck close to home. I really liked my fj80 with factory front and rear lockers. However the 100s ride much nicer and the v8 can not be beat. The hunt continues. I really appreciate all the help. BTW Is there a dedicated site for the 200 series, 2008+ LC.
