i got a 55 the other day, the kids have been busy striping everything off to get it ready for paint.

a couple of questions:

how much of the cancer in the rockers should i try to knock out?

the window gasket are old and i don't think i can get them off with out tearing them up, should i......
[1] soak them in armour-all or something to try and remove them without destroying them
[2] should i leave the glass in
[3] should i just remove glass and get new gaskets

1. Leave the Armour All away from your vehicle, it create fisheye's like you wont believe.2.Dependas on how nice a job you want? I would remove the glass and get new seals.3. Same as 2, how nice of job do you want, I would remove all the rust and fix it correctly! Hope that helps.

how hard is it to find new window seals, i have found all kinds of door weather strip floor mats, etc but no window seal any ideas?

and i want to go down to nothing but steel and build it up i just don't know how much cancer i should try and remove or how much to leave for the body shop?

don't think the back side window seals are available anywhere............trollhole and myself are in the same boat re: rust, on the 55 forum there is a thread on body seals <Definitive Swine Resource Thread>that would be of help to you on this..............cheers on the pig from another "Okie"

The rubber seals on my pig were fossilized from life in Arizona..,without new seals in hand (or sourced) it became a moot point quickly. Here is a link to the same question https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=150180
I guess the biggest compliment I have received thus far (and I have yet to wet sand and buff it) was given at two weeks ago at CMCC. A guy said that he saw pics of it here on mud...but this is the first time he has ever seen a cruiser that looked better in person than in pics. I don't know...the pics do hide any and all little murders pretty well. Regarding the rust...fix it all correctly the first time by welding in new steel. If you don't, a little overspray on the window rubber is the least of your worries. My .02...good luck and have fun with it.

on the cancer inside the rockers --

how do you treat it, even after cutting out the bad spots and weld in new steel there is still going to be untreated steel and oxidation going on inside the rocker channel.

can i spray in a bunch of rust converter or what?

Easy "fix" is wire brush the rust, hit it with rust converting paint then spray some ATF fluid on it with a garden sprayer. Messy but good.

On similar areas like that on my Pig I cut out what I could, replaced what I could, and slatherd POR15 on what I couldn't.

thanks for the tips -

now for the part where i show my true ignorance, how do i get my emblems off without destroying them?

Amos, I am doing the same thing with my pig. I cut out my rockers completely and am replacing them with IPOR's rocker. I am also (with the help of eventhough and my brother) welding in a recycled rear floorboard and new steel in the front floorboards. Then I am headed to body work and the paint shop!

Here's my thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=136876

Do as much steel replacement as possible, it's a PITA, but will pay for itself in the future.

The emblems are easy...but you have to get at them from the inside. Just unscrew the little nutserts from the posts that stick through the body panels.

As for the weather stipping, I have all but the rear door fixed windows and the little vent windows in the front. Those will have to stay in and get taped up. No choice there. All the other glass and weatherstripping is coming out. Here is a thread on the 55 forum about sourcing parts, including weatherstripping:

Have fun!

thanks -

my floors are good, and my roof gutter is good, the rockers are the only thing that worry me.

My rockers were like swiss cheese. I was debating a patch or what too. But I finally just decided to cut them off one day and about 5 pounds of wet dirt and rust fell on the ground. It had been months since it was exposed to water and it was still wet. If you don't get all the crap out of there, they'll just keep rusting from the inside out.

yeah thats what i was afraid of -

i was worried that if i just cut the swiss out there would still be lots of untreated/untreatable rust inside that could not be dealt with.

thanks again i will check on th ipor

Yes, but they don't come with all the boxing to make them sliders. They only come with the outer rocker piece. I got mine yesterday and so far they look like they will work really well. They are HEAVY!

I am not going to box mine in to make them sliders, I am just going to weld them to the existing metal (I think I have enough good metal to pull that off).

Lance didn't have any rockers left, and wasn't going to run anymore, but we took up a collection and got 8 people to commit to them. He ran 10 sets. If you want a set, there should be 2 left. Give him a call and see what he's got left.

When I get a chance to get a pic of mine I'll post one up in my restoration thread.

Yes - Lance owns IPOR - he is a great guy to deal with.
