That should be right. Do you have the EWD? I have it at the office I can run and get it if you are working on it today

No I sure do not. I am working on it but you don’t have to do that. Thank you very much for the offer though.

I am going to hunt down the hot leads into the unit.

Check my post from December 2 in this thread I will be at the office in five minutes and I will have the diagram

Check voltage at D2. Should be gray wire 12v only when in ACC

Those two terminals D2 and D1 should be switched 12v. All others should be hot. Check these and we will go from there. I got the ewd with me now so we will get it solved.

I wonder why my 12v cig lighter is hot without a key?

So both of those you are getting power with the key off? This is with nothing hooked up and just holding terminal unplugged and checking wires?

The initial readings were with everything plugged in to the panel. Unplugged the cig lighter 2D has the same readings but D1 is dead with no key or on ACC.

Edit: the actual cig lighter is on all the time but the other outlets are not.

Ok so the problem is on D2. When all of the new plugs are completely disconnected D2 has power? In theory we have isolated all the wiring and can focus on the D2. Did you make sure the old G13 is capped and not connected to anything? That is the same circuit as D2.

EDIT: Will PM to minimize chatter on thread

Alright everyone. BIG THANKS TO TXSUNDEVIL... He is a Mud King! He literally took 3 or so hours out of his day to help me track this all down... We were checking voltage at every Pin, tracing wires, double checking terminations, pulling fuses and relays, etc...

Then, TXSunDevil asked me to cycle the key (keep in mind my AC blower fan was on constantly). I could here the compressor relay clicking behind the dash... so I cycled on and off several times from OFF to ACC with the key. Then the relay did not click. I turned it to IGN and it came on! Could it be? A STUCK RELAY? That was our diagnosis...

The truck now performs like it should... now I need to get that new stereo installed.

A very BIG thank you to all the contributors on this post. I have just bought all the parts (minus new head unit as still deciding what to put in). I have a 98 with the Japanese Nav unit and cannot wait to remove it this weekend. I will post pics as I progress. :)

Another successful install of a 1998 Japanese Import 100 Series in New Zealand. Although the install is a bit nerve racking as you start to cut wires, it worked first time and with minimal challenges.

I will document my experience doing the install and what I learned from doing it.

My install time was approx 3 hours (without installing a head unit) and this included doing the prep work with the wiring loom ready for install.

I was lucky to obtain a centre console and also 12 inches of wiring loom from a local wreckers yard. They also provided me stereo bracket (double din) that was sitting on the roof of the car.

The condition of the centre console was good, just dirty and once cleaned it looked great.

I prepared the wiring loom and cleaned the ends ready for termination. I opted to follow the recommendations within previous installs and use the solder shrink to speed up the process...this was a great decision as very simple to do.

Once prepared I first removed the negative terminals from the battery and then removed the old unit.

I printed off the spreadsheet and checked my plugs against the charts prior to cutting. I noticed a few gaps where I did not have certain cables but I continued anyway and assumed this is because mine is the japanese spec car.

I also had some colour differences from the chart where the colour of my wire was different to the chart but I continued and I can confirm the pin layout is perfect so don't focus on the colours so much.

I will upload the next part in another post so I know this has uploaded properly.

My recommendation is once you cut a cable **And only do one plug at a time!!** pull the cable back through the loom so it is easy to keep the cables tidy and sorted for each plug

I finished off each plug and kept the loom very tidy and sorted for each plug connector.

Before terminating each wire I checked to ensure all open wires are covered to prevent a short when I reconnected the battery.

The unit operated perfectly and everything worked as expected.

With the loom kept tidy it made it very easy put everything back in behind the dash.

I did end up cutting off all the old plugs and terminated each end with shrink wrap, this made it a very tidy and professional end result...take your time and do the same so you don't fear a future short.

So the final put together and all I need now is to choose my new head unit...a job for tomorrow.

Thanks all and I am happy to offer any advice to anyone wanting to do this themselves.

Good morning,

You are the first Japanese spec to my knowledge to follow the pinout. I am glad it worked out for you. Here are the wiring diagrams for the 2002. Note the only difference is the navigation into the speaker and the now deleted MFD controls. This is so your navigation can give you turn by turn directions. When you pull the navigation system you will lose your left speaker unless you bypass. I have included the diagram for with navigation and without. Note the page numbers at the bottom for reference. In the US we use the Metra harnesses or similar. For your vehicle it shows to be a Metra 70-8112. This uses the preamp outputs on your new stereo and ties them into your speakers keeping your existing amp. They also make an amp bypass kit the Metra 70-8116 that I used to bypass the amp. Please verify fitment for your 1998. You have done the hard part. The stereo install is the easy part. I see you have the single DIN kit in? Is that what you are going to install? Earlier in the post I included the part numbers to the Toyota brackets that will allow you to put a Double DIN in there. The stereo is really plug and play with the correct harness. Be sure to get the antenna adapter. Congrats again on a great install!!

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide that info.

The bracket I bought came with the single kit pocket so I left it on to reduce the hole size, I'll remove it when I find my new stereo today. Double din unit, reversing camera with Android Auto is the plan. :)

I'll post some more info once completed!!

I look forward to your report. I noticed you were able to source that controller pretty quick. Do you have access to many junked cruisers over there? We would love to find a source for the 2003-2007 LC manual HVAC controllers. All of the units here were shipped with navigation and we can only source the parts new and they are very pricey. MUD has developed a post 03 conversion also. If you remove all of your old stuff that is no longer used you will be able to fund your new stereo.
