So I am in the middle of a mini truck power steering conversion and am working on fabbing up the power steering pump bracket. I'm going with the mini truck pump that came with the whole power steering setup I bought. Unfortunately I don't have the mounting bracket that originally mounted the pump in the mini truck so I will make my own.

The pulley that was on the mini truck pump when I got it was a bit bent, so I ordered another from the Yota Yard. When I got it in the mail, I found it was bent too! This leads me to the following long winded questions:

Since then I've read a fair bit here on the forum on this subject of power steering pump pulleys and the various widths of the crank pulleys etc. I hadn't really thought much about it until reading. So what I have is a 1978 2F with 2 wide grooves in the crank pulley and 2 wide grooves on the water pump too. The mini truck power steering pulley is a bit narrower than the landcruiser pulleys.

1) If I use one stock crusier width belt to run the crank to water pump to alternator and another slightly narrower belt to run the crank to water pump to power steering pump, won't this force one of the belts to slip since they are both driving the same accessory (water pump) since the one belt is narrower it will ride deeper in the groove (in effect a smaller pulley)? Or will the problem cancell itself out since the belt is also riding deeper in the crank pulley?

2) Will a landcruiser power steering pump pulley (say from a FJ60) fit on a mini power steering pump? If that is the case, I could put a LC pulley on the mini pump and run a wider belt, thus eliminating the problem in question 1.

Alternator is the tensioner for the alt belt - and likewise for the power steering pump. I don't think two different belt sizes would make any difference - least it didn't when I ran a mini pump.

Made my own bracket (sold it when I dumped the mini stuff - it was pretty nice) - but if an FJ60 bracket works that'd be a great idea.

Good luck.

I can't use the FJ60 pump bracket, my block isn't drilled for it. I'm going to fab something up using the smog pump bracket.

My 2nd question is whether the FJ60 pump pulley will fit on the mini truck pump. (Seeing as I need to get another pulley anyway).

1. Mixing belts on two pulleys will make the narrower one wear rapidly unless the two pulleys are the same diameter.

2. Probably.

Mark's Offroad makes a very good bracket for a saginaw pump and also sells saginaw pumps with toyota wide belt pullys. I just did this on my 55 and it is great. The saginaw pump is supposed to be MUCH better.

I actually have a Bill Dorry Saginaw PS pump bracket that I bought before he quit making them. So, I could always go that route.

But Since I have the Toyota mini pump (and I kinda like staying with Toyota stuff. I know, I know, I've heard all the arguments for availability of parts etc for Saginaw) I'm going to try to use the mini pump.

I guess I could always run the narrower belt if I only ran the power steering pump on it. Just trying to think of my options.

Does anyone know of somebody who makes a bracket to mount a mini pump onto the 2F smog pump bracket that I could buy? No point trying to recreate something that someone else has already worked the bugs out of.

A mid 80s Tercel pump mounts easily to the smog pump bracket.

No need to reinvent the wheel.

I have a extra fj60 pump and a extra mini pump if you need one. If you arent going to use the saginaw and want to sell it pm me.

I have what I think came from a 60 and will mount to were the alternator is now (passanger side) then I will need to remount the alternator, and run hoses to ther other side of the engine, has anyone done this, or is it better to go with a mount and put it on the same side as the hydraulics, I have a ways to go befroe I cross that bridge but thought I would ask while the subject is being brought up.

Ahhhhh - yes having a later 2F with PS holes tapped makes it easier. I put an 82 2F in my 76 - then when it came time to run the mini-pump made a bracket that used those holes. I set it up to use the exact same belt - so if one broke I could swap to the alternator to charge the battery if need be - so as to be able to make long trips home. The 2F alt belt was larger than the mini pulley I had - so I see that's a lot different than what you're stuck with.

I think I now have a JT Outfitters (this is not an endorsement) bracket that bolts to the top of the cylinder head - and works really well for a sag pump - I'd recommend that setup over something you're not 100% confident in.
