Hi Everyone, my truck has 300k miles. Unknown history, although it was single owner truck for 90% of it's life prior to my purchase. Overall seems cared for.

My PS Pump developed the leak from the back recently...I am debating on buying an OEM Rebuild Kit (Part 04446-60080) OR possibly a new PS pump unit (Part 44320-60182)

My preference is the less expensive option of the rebuild...but I do not know if there are any drawbacks to this...I have no other issues with my PS pump or system.

Also, my high pressure hose does not appear to have issues. Would you consider this a PM item? Part 44411-60430 - At $222 it seems a bit much if mine isn't currently leaking.

Let me know your feedback fellow mudders!

I can only say the Gates PS pump rebuild kit and Gates high pressure hose are top notch. Many have used them, including me, with excellent long term results.
I wouldn't hesitate to use them again, and I highly recommend both.

The most critical part of the job is getting the drive gear off and installed without damage. Resealing the pump is pretty easy, have done a bunch of them, mainly using EDELMANN 8826 or GATES 348407 kits. If using the dealer kit will need the mount o-ring, 90301-73004, with any of the kits will need the pressure port gasket, 44327-30030.

The high pressure hose has proven to be very durable, almost never replace them. The low pressure hoses are prone to becoming rock hard, we always replace all of them. They need to be oil hose, commonly called transmission oil cooler or power steering return hose. Need about 3' of 3/8" like GATES 350010 and a foot of 5/8" like GATES 362200.

If you decide to go with a new pump, don't trash the old one. If you want to dispose of it, I would like it for our porting experiments.

Great, thank you!!!

This is good. I guess i just didn't know if there could be other things that lead to the PS pump prematurely leaking again after a rebuild...I would rather go this route. Good tip for the additional gasket and glad to know the high pressure hose is robust...it's a spendy item! Haha.

That part number is for a housing, the pump assembly is 44320-60182?

Doh! Thanks for catching that. Looked it up in a hurry I suppose!

I installed a new factory ps pump about a year ago, about $150 IIRC. I have my old one available, if you'd like to do the rebuild off of the vehicle. Just give me an offer.

@Norcalfj100 If you want to borrow my highly calibrated, precision PS gear removal tool, your welcome to it. You gotta pick it up from me in a Santa Monica. Makes removal and install a snap.

Niceeeee! I like a good homebrew solution! Did you go with a rebuild or replacement pump?

That's a good price. I found them for around $244 currently...

I went with a replacement pump. Mine was weeping and groaning. New pump is whisper quiet. The warning on drive gear removal is real. The teeth are very sensitive to any damage. The wooden bar I created clamps tightly around the gear teeth without risk of damage. And the 24+ inch length gives you great leverage both cracking the 12pt 17mm socket off the pump shaft as well as tourquing it back on. Way easier than fumbling with towels, leather gloves and/or vice grips. It may look janky, but it works as well as an SST from Toyota.

Works for me! Mine is quiet. No issuses other than the back leaking...perhaps the rebuild is in my future this weekend. With the help of the midfat SST! Haha.

For a pure data point, I cut a check when I was too busy with work some ~decade ago & showed up with a new ‘Yota PS pump & HP side hose (compliments of feeding Dan’s dogs & his Keystone Light fund back when) -to get my failed pump that was leaking AT/PS fluid from pump into the crankcase oil.

My mechanic was super conscious about bleeding it, but my new pump has a “dead spot” returning to center from a left turn, so returning right on the wheel has a narrow dead spot. Then, and only then - when doing parking lot speeds / barely off-idle in the motor RPM’s.

I kept my old pump, but it’s pretty low on my “to-do list” - I bought a rebuild kit since the new pump showed issues. I’m not even sure a pump that has a case that leaked into the crankcase is worth rebuilding, my thought being the case is now worn beyond rebuild ability. Kevin would know, I don’t.

I hear it’s rare to go so far as mine was worn - odd as it was migrating fluid around the ~115K mark.

The Gats HP hose is low quality and comes without installation hardware needed that you have to take from your OEM old hose
its ok but not HD

That is just the front seal leaking, there is a replacement in the kit, no worries, common deal.

You are lucky that PS pump rebuild kits are available there. Here we have only two options. Either search the junk yard to find the used ps pump, which you will get almost at 75% price of new pump.
Or you just buy the creepy Chinese pumps with fancy packings and fix them as it is. The bonus point is that these Chinese pumps don’t give even one hour guarantee. If it worked well, you are lucky. If not then consider it as your loss. Because more than 80% people who used New Chinese Pumps are just scratching their heads.

I will suggest go for rebuild and be gentle with ring and seals. Apply thin oil film on their surfaces to make sure these are seating well.

Tip: When turning your vehicle right or left especially at low rpms, never spin the steering wheel 100% to the right or left. Spinning up to 90% is ok as it does not bring extreme pressure on pump and hence increase its life.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions! My rebuild kit is on it's way. Where are you from that there's so much trouble getting parts?!
