Power Steering Pump Diesel 1HDT vs Gas 1FZ

My '95 F80 had a steering wheel that felt like a Cadilac and my '92 HDJ80 feels like a tank. The HDJ has a leak. Before I take it off to try resealing, I wanted to see if anyone knew if I was expecting too much out of the HDJ pump compared to the Gasser or if it is just a sign that I need a new pump.

Fix the leak.
Jack the front wheels up, fill the reservoir, and with engine off cycle the steering wheel from stop to stop. You may have to do this a few times, and steering should feel smoother. This will evacuate air in the system. Fill as required.
