I’m in the process of removing my pump for reconditioning. The injectors are already out, and the hard fuel lines are off. I’m essentially following the FSM protocol (FU-28) but I’m stuck at step 14a - removal of the injection pump drive set nut. I have the special service tool. I’ve tried attaching it with the included pin as well as securing it with one of the timing pulley bolts, but it doesn’t hold it still. When I tries to loosen the nut, the pump rotates.

How am I supposed to secure this thing so that it doesn’t move? It seems that with only one attachment point to the tool, it will just pivot.

Any tips?

Do you actually need to remove that nut to remove the pump?
@SNLC got any tips?

I had the pump out of mine, but have no memory of removing that. Certainly never had that SST.
Sometimes the FSM has unnecessary steps when you're just removing parts.
Some steps may be necessary if you're rebuilding everything, but not necessary to remove an assembly

I assumed the nut would keep it from sliding back. The only photos I’ve seen of pumps removed had the shaft threads exposed / the nut off. If that’s not the case, I’d be glad to go ahead and push it out once it’s unbolted. That would be welcome news.

Yes you have to get that nut off to remove the pump

Try holding the balancer bolt to keep the engine from turning over when you break it free

Next challenge is getting the shaft that nut is on to pop rearward free of it's tapered seat in the timing drive gear....

If you are removing just the pump and nothing else, then the nut off the pump has to be removed. Then you need to "push" the pump out with a a push/puller tool.
If you are just removing the front timing gear cover, then no need to remove the nut. But if pumps is coming off the motor - then nut must be removed.

Do you have a crank shaft pulley holding tool? I use it to hold the crank and then remove the nut. The crank and pump are all connected via gears behind the cover.
