Power Steering Hose Blew Up.

Sometimes you can handle a bend in the hose another way if all you have on hand is bulk. Say it's a 90 degree bend, right? Rather than using a hose that's the same length as the 90 degree molded one, you intentionally use one that's way longer - long enough to go 270 degrees in the other direction to create a loop. This way you distribute the needed curve into a loop rather than a bend that may collapse the hose. Was that clear?

I'll try again in case it wasn't. Rather than an abrupt 90 degree turn to the left, you leave a bunch of extra hose and make a full loop to the right, then rearward, back under the hose and connect to your fitting. Hope that helps, rather than confuses.

Anyhow, you'll use more hose but that's hardly an issue when you're immobilized. I suggest you pay more attention to securing the hose with zip ties, etc to prevent future chafing. This would be a permanent solution with proper clamps.

On all older 93-97 trucks this hose takes a beating(heat). If when you grab this hose and it is hard, it is time to change it before it gets to excited and blows. I think if you have not taken the time to replace this hose as a PM, you may need to carry the hose and clamps when it blows. It can create alot of problems if you do not carry a spare part. AS dan says it is a b*tch to have the PS go out. I once had to change mine out in AZ on Charlou gap(i know it is misspelled), I was by my self and form a hose with the brake booste(a short section) hose(took the kink out of it), another piece of hose from some where. A hollow piece of tool in the bag of tricks. and made it back to town. Had a killer day even with the hose brake. Fixed the truck on monday with the proper aftermarket hose. Later robbie

Just got done swapping it out with a new section of 3/8's PS return line bought at O'reily's. Dan is right, 3/8's is a tight fit. Got it on there though.

Apparently this wasn't the first time this has happened. The PO or some hack mechanic had replaced the OE part with 7/16 fuel line.

Anyway, I'll order the correct part, but will wait until warmer climes prevail before doing the swap a second time. It was way too cold to be working outside today. I don't have any doubt that the bulk hose 3/8 will hold up, it is after all- PS return specific hose.

Much easier to do this chore with the battery box removed.

So far no strange noises. Well, there were a few at first, but after running the pump for a while they disappeared, I'm guessing it was just residual air in the lines.

But now my idle is low... 400 rpms, it shakes the car at stop lights. What did I bump?

I had the same hose blow on my '94 and I drove it about 10 miles home, the pump was making all kinds of racket by the time I pulled in the drive. I ordered the Previa hose from Cdan (luxury of having a 40 in the garage) and fixed it w/o any effect to the PS pump -

yep probably air

the low idle it likely from the computer loosign memory from removing the battery, it has to re-learn the idle air control valve. it shoudl fix itself in a few run cycles.

that was my thought as well. I'll just wait it out then. If it doesn't get better in 3-4 days I'll check back with you guys.

CDan,

A bunch of us in WC were going to get together and do a PM swap on that hose. Yours was the second one i've seen fixed on the trail and the labor of it with a hot engine bay does not look like fun. What is the Previa part number if you don't mind? We had intended to just used the 5/8 hose and clamps but the proper bend would be nice.
thanks,
dmc

The Previa hose is a 44412-28160. There are currently 2 in the US, both of them are on my shelf....;)

Sorry to hear of your troubles Doc. If it makes you feel better, I believe my whole pump is shelled. Since this is a PS thread, I will ask here and hijack your thread:D

When your pumps make noise, is it a very high pitched metal on metal squeel all the time? Mine is, and changes with RPM. Is this what you are adding detergent for, or the FORD death whine WHILE your turning? Since dan threw out the big ol 300 Im not really wanting to replace this beast.

Toyota's published list price is $25.95 vs $313.49 for the "correct" oil cooler assembly.

Now i'm all paranoid and chit from this and will be checking mine as soon as I get home. :flamingo:

The whole 80's section has been nothing but paranoia since HG's started to fail....

Hey, we're driving 10-15 year old vehicles that have (generally) many miles on them.

We all know and love Toyota quality and reliability, but nonetheless, age gets eveyone and everything.

I'm slowly replacing every critical system in the vehicle as it gets older in days, months, years.

We all love our rigs, yes?

There should be no excuse for paranoia. Start wrenching and start replacing stuff.

Oh yeah, feed Dan's dogs....:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Nit nit nit! :flipoff2: :D These are Toyotas. They are tanks and reliable as no other and not supposed to break down.

It's nice to know these problem areas as PM's. :D

FYI
I just ordered the last one on Dan's shelf today. Apparently they are on national backorder.

I got the other last week, should be here soon.

Yes, if you run it dry, plan to buy a new pump. Cut the belt or invest. I have done this with a Toyo pump inadvertainly and the pump died a hard death. It was a spectacular grenade! Toyo runs a pump that has steel vanes and they are not forgiving. They don't blow easily when lubed, but give up promptly when dry.
If it is dry, then cut the belt or pay a lot!

Mr Macgyver you need to check your vechicle. If it is a 91-92 there is a belt. If 93-97 there is no belt because the pump is driven off a idler on the inside of the timing cover. So the pump is gear driven, no way to cut the belt on these critters. Now on the 100 series you can go back to cutting the belt. later robbie
