Power Steering Hose Blew Up.

Funny to see this thread, I was stranded in Colorado 2 years ago due to the same return hose. I repaired it with the hose Dan sells. Well, this past week in Big Bend, the repaired hose cracked in the bend again. Luckly, I had learned my lesson and had 3/8 hose on hand and 2 bottles of ATF. Only used one to refill the system. My wife had just got out of the car to make sure the tent was zipped up and saw the stream of fluid pouring out of the engine.

I spent some time 2 years ago looking for silicone 10mm hose to repair this, but had no luck. I guess I will look around again, but I most likely will just change it out every year or so with tranny hose as PM. Maybe this thread will bring another option.

A bump to the top---

We were out this past week in Escalante/Grand staircase and AliA had this hose blow out on the shelf road of shelf roads. He had a hose to cut down and replace, but there is no space to work on this with the motor hot.

This should be on the inspection checklist for every oil change. Especially if it has never been replaced.

The hose is the one that leaves the steering gear and heads to the paper clip cooler. It comes out of the gear and makes a 90 degree turn downward where it connects to a solid pipe. My original one got stiff and brittle and burst in the curve. The entire hose was pretty hard. The replacement one I got from Dan tore in the same spot.

Now, I went to the hydraulic house and got a piece of 3/8 hydraulic hose that was next to impossible to get on the flared fittings. I took my drill and got a drill bit a few sizes above 3/8 inch, put the drill in reverse, and removed a small amount of rubber from the ID. It made it possible to slip the hose over the flares. This hose is the hydraulic hose that they use their fancy fitting machine to crimp fittings on with. $8 a foot. Tractor stuff. Time will tell if it will hold.

I always guessed that the fluid leaving the steering gear into this particular hose is the hottest because it is on it's way to the cooler. Maybe that is why it seems to be a so hard on that section of hose.

Very reasonable to assume the hottest part of the loop will be at the cooler inlet.

This thread has some pretty good info. I just had that same line blow up on my 80. I'm heading up to the shop to get some 3/8 PS line for a quick fix.

I called my local Toyota dealership to ask about the hoses. I'm always bugging them about obscure FJ80 parts...they get a kick out of my requests.

Its 8* outside, so this should be fun.

You can also get some 3/8 transmission hose and use a section of that. The down side to that is the fact that 3/8 is tighter than hell to jamb on the lines and there is no moulded bend.

I've been using 3M silicone paste to lubricate lines before pushing hoses on. It made 3/8 go on quite easily. No subsequent leaks in my low pressure power steering hose or transmission cooler hoses.

I purchased this:
More Information for REIN PSH0328
it was a perfect fit and identical in almost every way to the hose I pulled off (I am making the assumption that the hose I replaced was OEM). The original hose was still good but was at least 9 years old and I already had both the steering box and power steering pump out of the truck.

Lol...mine just blew tonight.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put that evil on you.

That 3m paste that GummyCarbs posted was a game changer. I'm going to start using it on everything. EVERY. THING.

I bought one of the $30 aftermarket coolers from autozone and some extra 3/8 hose and just bypassed the old paper clip cooler. I wish I had noticed the 3M paste! I just used some of the thick Lucas power steering leak stop to lube it up. Got it on far enough to put the clamp on. Good enough for me right now. No majors leaks as of yet.
