I would like to install power steering on my 81 BJ42, but don't know much about what is needed. I have been searching for OME power steering for a direct bolt-on, but they are very rare and hard to find - especially for the 3B diesel.
My Question: Will a mini truck power steering setup work with the 3B - and if so, what kind of brackets/pulleys would be needed to fit the saganaw pump to the engine? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Right there with you...

I'm trying to figure out the same thing. From what I gather, you'll need a different thermostat outlet, radiator, and power steering pump/pulley/bracket. I currently have the bracket and pulley. I have a 79 FJ40 power steering pump I'm trying to determine if it will work. I just haven't had a chance to assemble and test it all out yet.

The trucks with OEM power steering like '83 and later BJ60's, use a different altenator and altenator bracket than the non-power steering trucks. Try Interior Autowrecking in Vernon, B.C., Steve T at Extreme Bends, G&S Cruisers for some suggestions.

You'll also need to check your crank pulley, older ones have only 2 bolt holes to pull off the pulley, newer ones have 6 holes to allow mounting of the power steering drive pulley and A/C drive pulley. With the '81 it's likely the older 2 bolt hole pulley which means a new pulley as well.

I wonder if someone has some OEM part numbers for some of the items needed for this swap... Like 3b pump brackets, pulleys ect .....

Luckily, I have the newer style crank pulley with 6 bolt holes. So, one hurdle crossed..... Does anyone have pictures of the pump setup on the 3b so I can get an idea where and how brackets attach? If I can get a pump mounted, installing a mini truck ps box may be the most do-able solution.

i have a good used PS pump off a 3b if your interested..in Langley BC

also not the greatest picture but it will give you and idea of how it mounts

Mike you'll need the A/C spacer and the power steering pulley to bolt onto your crank pulley. You'll need the power steering pump and idler pulley for the power steering belt and possibly a different altenator.

BEAUTIFUL!!
congrates

That is all good stuff. I opted to do an FJ60 pump and box because of availability in the states and strength.

I have the older single pulley on the crank and run just a single wide belt. I custom made a rigid bracket for the pump that is located under the alternator. The block has threaded holes there that worked perfectly. The belt adjustment is still done with the alternator. I put a 1/4" steel bracket along the left frame horn to strengthen where the box is located. It works great, is all Toyota, and is a stronger steering setup than a mini truck option. I live in the states, so these were the most readily availabe options.

Happy steering!

The FJ60 set-up sounds like a good alternative if I can not locate the BJ42 parts. Do you have any photos of your set-up so I can get a visual idea of how the pump and steering box are mounted? I am also curious where the idler pulley mounts to the engine (if I were to locate one)?

My only picture will not upload, as it's too large. I am on the road with the FJ Cruiser Trail Team, so I can't take any pictures of the setup for you. Perhaps I can explain it a little better.

To mount the FJ60 steering box I had to move the shock tower rearward a bit and weld in some 1/4" plate steel just in front on the outside of the frame. The box got bolted through this. I also trimmed the fender skirt to make room for the box. This setup also allows me to keep my PTO winch, because the box is mounted on the outside of the frame rail.

The pump is mounted to the block directly underneath the alternator using a rigid mount. You can see the threaded holes on the side of the block in the picture on this thread, just behind the right shock tower. I use a single belt (and always carry a spare) and adjust with the alternator mount. Everything else remained stock on the engine.

I have been extremely happy with the steering feel and reliability of this setup. I appologize for no pictures but hope this information helps. My biggest reasons for this approach were PTO winch compatability, pump strength, and all Toyota.

i'm doin the same sorta thing as full nelson. i have a 40 3b and bought a 60 with the same motor gearbox and transfer. this is mainly for spares but will swap out the power steer and pto plus the disc front end.. cheap parts and relatively easy mods. need to adjust the front shock mounts and also the fender support in order for arm to reach from above chassis rail. well, so i believe. havnt done the conversion yet but its comin... oh yes.. its comin..
all the parts are gonna be stock.. i'll be usin the twin pulley system as opposed to fullnelsons wide belt thingy..

good luck with the mods..
:D
