Power steering canister

I'm posting here, because it is not really related to a specific series and i may get more answer here concerning power steering then in the 40 section.

My BJ42 has OEM power steering setup, like every 60. My problem is the canister cap. After every good session of turning wheels, mostly when locked in front, the cap leak badly and i get PS fluid every where under the hood. I once tried to order a new cap and gasket but i think they are discontinued by toyota. I've been told that the same canister was used on other model, but i don't know which. And anyhow i am not sure it would solve the problem.

Does anyone have this problem, is it just the cap leaking, due to pressure or liquid being too hot? What cause this exactly, the cap or something is wrong in the system? pump seal going? liquid boiling?.

Turning the front wheels while the diff is locked makes the PS system work harder...this means more heat. My guess is that if you add a second cooler on the return line that it should help. Use one of the smaller "tranny" coolers. The additional fluid due to the cooler will help also.

If it is a 60 PS unit, you should be running ATF in it, not PS Fluid - by the way.

Yes i'm aware of that, and that help, but still.

So your saying that the liquid is getting hot? why would it leak through the canister cap? heat = expension then over flow throught cap?

I know they are different level of brake liquid (DOT) for high heat application, is there something similar for ATF?

On competition trucks I always ran a 3/4 gallon reservoir. Boiling the fluid is a real issue when the
volume is so low. Most hydraulic systems require a capacity at least equal to their gallon per minute
rating. Coolers help but volume is better... This also works for auto trannys.
On one run, ' 24hrs on the Hammers ' we boiled the fluid out of a pump (saginaw) four times before the day was over. We were running 39" swampers. With a 3/4 gallon reserve I never even recall the fluid getting too hot to touch

Do you remember the part number? I'd love to order from Dan but being in Canada, for only a cap it is not worth it. If it is still available my toyota guy should be able to get me one.
