Hi all,

Getting the parts together for a saginaw/minitruck power steering conversion on mh FJ40. I've ready for many-an-hour on mud about these conversions. But I wanted to post some pictures of my engine compartment to make solicit some opinions on "do I have what I need".

First, some background on what I have:

1. truck is 78 FJ40, however it has a 1F engine
2. alternator has already been moved to passenger side by PO
3. I have a saginaw pump with shaft for press-on hub/pulley (but no pulley yet)
4. Both my water pump and crank shaft have dual pulleys and are both only using the outer groove (important)
5. For the pump bracket, I am using something that kinda looks like the JTO style bracket (got it second hand) but isnt the same. Anyone know who made this bracket? Also shown in the picture is the minitruck box

I should mention that these parts have been ordered but not yet arrived.

Here is one picture of the drivers side of the engine.

and another picture, different angle.

Can anyone tell me
a) the mounts at the bottom - do they look like what I need? They seem to be the mounts to a smog pump.
b) there is a single crud-filled hole on the block near the exhaust header. Is this also used to mount the pump bracket?
c) In general, the pulleys that people are using (narrow or wide) - do the pumps generally attempt to line up with the front or rear groove on the crank pulley?
d) should my belt for the PS run directly to the crank pulley, or should it go over the water pump pulley first?
e) anyone who has used the 1-B-50-SDS pulley, can you tell me if it is wide or narrow belt? I've ready a dozen posts about pulleys and while some people indicate this pulley, I couldnt find explicit mention of what belt it uses.

Thanks all!

just a crazy idea here but have you considerd asking these questions to whom you bought all this stuff?

And why do you have what appears to be an O2 sensor in your downpipe?

2 front head bolts........

Use the back pulley grooves for your p/s.... around the crank, water pump and p/s.......

let the front belt stay the way it is.........

dangle: I pieced these parts from different sources. The gearbox and pump bracket were from a fellow who never did his conversion (I think he had a v8 which this stuff didnt fit on or something).
the O2 sensor is used for the TBI fuel injection system

grant: where can I get some beer? thanks for the photo and explanation. What kind of pump bracket do you have?

Thats not my cruiser..........

Just had that pic in my archive..........The bracket is from JTO....

When you remove the two head bolts, its a good idea to have the engine cold and no pressure in the cooling system as its been known to cause some problems with H/gasket issues if not careful...........torque back down to spec..........
