I am looking to get a bit more power from my 1999 LC.

What are my options ? Looking to avoid large budget and major engine modifications.

Anybody went with a K&N filter ?

How oftern(mileage) should spark plugs be changed ?

Thanks
Jay

dont do the k&n. you mileage goes to sh*t once the MAF and throttle body are coated with a nice layer of oil and dirt. just threw mine away after a year. no noticalbe power gains, just a bit louder. you could clean the MAF. that may improve responsiveness and mpg. our trucks are more of a steady trucker than a power house.
-gut the interior except the driver seat....

headers, exhaust, re-gearing, deck plate mod, new OEM filter, maintenence.

thats about all you can do. RE-gearing won't give you more power, just better acceleration at a cost of high speed comfortability.

Realistically, how much of a restriction is the stock exhaust? My truck is from a rust belt state and my muffler is getting awfully soft from corrosion. Been thinking about doing exhaust from the headers all the way back.

exhaust isn't overly restrictive find a used trd supercharger other than that or uni chip and turbo your gains won't be that significant cost versus performance gain ratios suck for the 100

has anybody on here actually used the unichip? Are the power gains that noticeable? I asked Summit Racing but I think I'd rather have someone on these forums guarantee that I will notice some kind of increased power gain

Jay,

It depends on your definition of "power boost" or your budget. Short of force induction.... But that's big money. Slee Offroad offers the turbo - TRD stopped offering the supercharger.

The k&n filter isn't going to give you anything other than a possible headache with getting oil on the air sensor. Those throttle body spacers ... Well some folks swear by them but tests shows otherwise. If you have bigger tires, re-gearing would help a lot. Carrying less stuff in the truck or having the stock tires will make the truck feel faster :D

Some people on this list that got the exhaust headers are reporting good things. I got them but haven't had a chance to install them.

Anything can be done with some time & money. Take what people say with a grain of salt including mine. Good luck and let's us know what you decide to do.

Stroker Kit - yes there is one available for our lovely 2UZ-FE.

What about aftermarket cams? Someone has to make some reprofiled bumpsticks for these engines...and I don't think it would be hard to free up some power while maintaining a relatively normal idle.

Edit:

Just did some googling and holy **** cams are expensive. Looks like TTC is the only major company offering 2uz-fe cams (and they do have a great selection of profiles) but they are $1800 a set. ON SALE.

-lextreme has some stuff. no idea on quality ect. looks like they do v-8 swaps into sc300's for drift. i would think theyd have a good idea on "pimpin out" the 2uz.

-as a side note. imo it seems like an ems could net you a nice gain. but dont know how accepting our trucks would be given all the security and electronics. seems like a 4.7l should be capable of a bit more with just a re-map.

I welded up an intake pipe out of 3" mandrel bent aluminum and modded the airbox on my LC a bit ago. Seat of pants seems to say that it is more responsive. Still using the factory air filter. I'll try to get some pics posted.

I am running 285-75-16 without regearing......could this be killing the truck ?

How is the turbo kit from slee ....does it worthen gas consumption ?

Any instrution how to clean up the throttle body inejction ?

if you are not going to stay with stock Toyota air filter then would go with high quality dry filter with good airflow and cleaning properties like a Wix or Amsoil. Then I would add synthetic fluids (Amsoil or Mobil 1).......then if really jonesing would add the headers that were just produced by Dick Thorley...and as last resort go with a Unichip to keep things lower cost and still good all around gains.

1999 Toyota Land Cruiser Unichip Tuner, Unichip Performance Chip

if money is burning a hole in your pocket then get a TRD supercharger kit but be sure to remove the chip or buy the one specifically for your rig.

Your tires definitely cost you 1-2 mpg and some power. Re-gearing would help here.

Slee's Turbo will definitely get the power WAY up and supposedly the mpg stays almost stock.

There are a few threads on cleaning the TB and MAF sensor.

Here are some pics of the intake pipe I made. You can't see it in the photo that great, but there are 4 ports set up for the various vac lines.
