Hi guys,

I am looking for my first fj40 and have found one local on Craigslist. Just wondering what everyone thinks? Good deal, a little high, about right. I took a look at it today and said I would let him know in a bit...It is in really nice shape. The tub is not original as it was replaced and is now made out of 1/4 inch steel. Back has a tailgate that latches. Everything works, and has soft top and bikini top.

I would have love a hard top as I'm in the Northeast and looking for a daily drive in great shape, but I can do without one....My budget is 12k max. He's a little above, but figured there was room to move. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, that was the only one listed and I was a little overwhelmed when looking to take any...Wife was chirping in my ear...Lol. Thanks for your reply though...The no hard top definitely hurts

Any more pics available? Only see one on Craigslist.

Maybe as ad says, "all you have to do is drive it". Would look for evidence of leaks, condition of front knuckles, etc... Body work done professionally? Evidence of bondo repairs under paint, etc...

Also, from pic looks like suspension a bit worn...rear springs sagging pretty good. Wheeling or towing induced?

Would keep looking a bit IMO. Personally would want hardtop, etc... for $14,000.

Some things to think about. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Don't worry about finding something "local".

Expand your search area.... to all of Lower 48.

Search all of craigslist..... Look on ebay..... the more you search, the more you will see and compare.

Shipping across country isn't that expensive.
Thanks...I've been looking on Craigslist for awhile and I do look all across the country, but this was one I could actually touch, and hear running. Just get a feel.for what I was looking at. My biggest concern with out of state is I have no idea what I'm really getting I'll keep up the search though. Thanks
everyone for all the great info

What ever you find, ask to have a mud member "close" to the cruiser take a look at it. Perhaps help him with cost for looking... Most guys on here know what they are looking at and can give you an honest opinion.
Awesome...Thank you for the info. I had no idea, but like the sounds of that

When I was looking I narrowed down my search criteria to certain year models. For me it was 79 and up.
1. disc breaks
2. gas tank outside passenger compartment
3. 3.70 gears to help down the road
4. etc, etc

Some people like ambulance doors, so that would be 75 and up

You get the picture.
I do...I'm looking for a 72 and up if possible. Stock except for a little lift, hard top, disc brakes and in good enough shape were I don't have to do anything to it unless I want to. My son is driving and taking my ride, so time for me to get what I would.like for a daily driver

For that money, I personally would pass and keep looking. Your going to want a hardtop and hard doors. Which I know you can find but thats more money and then paint to match and then you have a tad more than you figured into it. Good luck I hope you find what you looking for. A lot of sellers will send video and such which can help too on out state purchases. But like said above most members will help each other out and test ride a rig for you..
