i used por 15 on my frame and the paint has dried . My question is to paint on top of the por15 a different color you must use por 15 self etching primer . do you have have to lightly sand the por 15 first or can you just apply the primer on top of the por

thanks brad

Brad,

I have never used POR15 but have been doing quite a bit of research on its use. According to their instructions, you do not have to do any sanding. Just spray the self-etching primer and then topcoat. I think they say the best way, however, (which is too late for you) is to spray a very light mist coat of primer after the POR15 is no longer tacky but before it's cured. Then come back with a full coat of primer and topcoat.

I don't think it would hurt anything to sand before priming, FWIW.

I used the Chassis Black over the POR15. The directions for that application say you must sand prior to the top coating if the paint has cured for (I think) more then 24 hours. I have not read anything about their self etchiong primer. I do know that if you paint the chassis black on with out sanding it may peal off in sheets.

Either. I phoned them a couple of days ago to see how to exactly use the POR15 with the chassis black and they said the chassis black could go straight over the chassis black as long as the POR15 wasn't fully cured. During the conversation, that seemed to imply, "when the POR15 is ready for another coat". I think they have a "tacky but nothing comes off on the glove" test.....sounds like 1 to 4 hours depending upon temp and humidity.

Self etching

It seams to be quite the process, I had my frame and many other parts sand blasted a couple of months ago and have been eager to get to painting. I finally got everything preped and decided to start painting last night after work . . . bad idea but the weekends are limited so what the hell.

I first started at the begining of the week by going through all the POR 15 procedures; Marine clean . . . wash . . . let it dry for the day . . . Metal Prep . . . wash . . . let it dry for the day. Now that It was ready to paint I decided to go witht the combo foam brush, foam roller (bad idea, bubbles) and then went back and hit it with a cheap hvlp gun I bought on Amazon for $19, to get all the hard to reach places. I should have known better than to paint at night, not oly did I get overspray on my white truck . . .ahhh . . but FYI it is bad idea to paint black paint in the dark, outside, with a halogen light.

I got it done but did not have time to spray on the top coat. So here I am tonight sanding everything down with 220 grit, many runs, I am glad I sanded it before I top coated it or it would have been a mess. I am headed out tonight to finish cleaning everything once again with Marine Clean so I paint it tomorrow. I am first goinggoing to dust it with the Self-Etching primer, which I bought at a local store here in Spokane for les the POR website . . . SCORE!!! Not really . . . this stuff is expensive . . $25 for one can. Wish me luck!!
